KEY POINTS
  • There's an option on the upcoming Ford Mustang Mach-E for the all-electric vehicle to broadcast engine noises into the cabin.
  • The engine noises sound like they're coming from the front of the vehicle but it's actually coming from the car's speakers.
  • Ford did this to make the new all-electric crossover feel more like a Mustang.
  • It's electronically generated but it's based on vehicle torque -- "It's taking a look at your incoming torque and power signals, speed and it's doing the math to say we should generate this frequency at this loudness."

I just want the ability to change the sound. Like sound sample packs... make it sounds like a space ship or an airplane... different types of vehicles, or no sound at all.

And I want the ability to turn it off...

Edit: Will it play those sounds outside too? How else will you be able to notify the person next to you at the stoplight that you want to race? Without that engine revving noise to let them know?

You'll look pretty silly "revving" and smiling at them when inside the car you can hear the "roar" but outside they will just see you winking at them in silence--they'll go fast just to get away from you!

Edit 2: Article mentions the sounds can be turned off ;)

Sound is an important part of the driving experience, just as soundtracks and sound effects bring movies to life.

Here's an interesting excerpt from Sam Abuelsamid's article about the Mustang GT350:

The future may well be electric, but the lack of a mechanical soundtrack from an electric propulsion system will always be a disappointment to me. The visceral appeal of a great engine is to me an important part of the driving experience. The sound that emanates from this flat-plane crank V8 as it approaches it 8,250 rpm redline is quite distinct from the average Mustang but also much throatier than the shriek that comes from something like a Ferrari. With the dual mode exhaust in its normal mode, it’s muted enough not to annoy your neighbors too much, but switching it sport once you hit the open road will send a shiver down your spine.

Should be cool to hear when we get our cars. Starting to think that day will never come but must remain calm.....

I wonder of the GT soundtrack will resemble the 1400 MME. That would be something fun.

Jaguar had fun with a soundtrack. I liked it when I was test driving the iPace.

I hope there’s an option to shut this feature off. If I wanted a car that sounded like a V8, I would have purchased one.

Yeah of course. It's the third word in the first bulleted key point, and all over that article. Also, not sure it will sound like a V8? I'm curious to see what they came up with, as well as how it differs for the three drive modes, and how it will differ in the GT.

I have two Chevy Volts and over these 9 years of ownership have never tired of the quiet.
Engine noise is noise!!!
My newest Volt at low speeds makes a sound for pedestrians, but I cannot hear it.

I want my MME to be nice and quiet.

The engine noise is an option that you have control of it. You can choose quiet or unbridled. For all I know it comes with the Premium, First Edition, California and GT. You want quiet then you choose quiet mode. For those who would like to try unbridled then they hear burbling noise but it is subdued to say the least.
My understanding is that the vehicles that are bound for Europe they will make a sound when they are traveling below 18 mph or so to warm pedestrians of an EV vehicle's presence. We may have the same exterior audio warning in North America also. Those details should be released from Ford for clarification purposes.
Now I like quiet also. What anyone would like to do with those audio/sounds options, it is up to them. I get plenty of them from my Mustang GT.
In the meantime, I have to be patient until mine arrives.

I read through, but didn't find any mention of what I was wondering. Is there any chance this won't be included on the Select trim package being that doesn't come with the B&O sound system?

What DaveRuns wants is the ability to turn the sound off forever, not just for the current drive. Sometimes software designers or automobile engineers think they know best and make the default setting for a feature to be in a certain state after every cycle of a car having been on and turned off. See for example some Stop/Start ICE engine designs. Also, some lane keeping warning designs reset to on for each new trip when the driver would prefer the system off.

So having the option to turn the sound off isn't the same as having the option to turn the sound off.

People don't realize most vehicle engine sounds nowdays are artificially rendered. Engineers fine tune systems to make today's mustangs sounds like 70s cousins. So honestly this is that far off from what enginers do with ICE vehicles today. The difference being that this is being done via cabin systems and not mechanical exhaust notes.

Could be fun!

All Mach E come with the B&O sound system.
The Select model will devoid of those sound options. Quiet it will be.
