The Michelin Pilot Sport EV will be rolled out during 2021 in a choice of 16 sizes (OE: 11 sizes; replacement market: five sizes)

Michelin has launched its first tire designed to address the specific demands made by electric sports cars.

Launching April 1, the company says the Michelin Pilot Sport EV delivers:
  • Grip on dry and wet roads irrespective of the tire’s level of wear, taking into account the higher weight and weight-distribution characteristics associated with electric sports cars.
  • Resistance to wear in response to the high torque and acceleration forces of electric sports cars.
  • The Michelin Pilot Sport EV’s low rolling resistance extends range by up to 37 miles.
  • 20% less perceptible road noise thanks to Michelin Acoustic technology, which takes the form of a custom-developed polyurethane foam that reduces cabin noise.

The new Pilot Sport E tread pattern has some similarity to the PILOT SPORT 4 SUV

From the way the press release reads. It sounds like their focus was on rolling resistance, which is a rubber composition issue.

It may be the exact same tread pattern.

The increased range seems almost too good to be true.

But I'll definitely be keeping an eye on these as reviews come out.

Come next year I’ll be buying new wheels and tires for my Mach E. Looking to do a staggered setup for the spring/summer/fall setup, and using the stock wheels w/nokians for the winter setup.
These tires might be what I end up getting!
I too am looking forward to some reviews.

If these tires can legitimately add 37 miles of range, I'd definitely consider getting them

The fine print on the Michelin website's press release from earlier this year says this about the claimed 37 mile range increase:

Rolling Resistance internal study carried out in October 2020, comparing a 255/45 R19 MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV (6.7kg/t) with the same-sized MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4 SUV (8.8kg/t). In the case of an electric vehicle weighing 2,151kg with a range of 540km, the difference (2.1kg/t) equates to more than 60km of additional range, or more than 10 percent of the original range.

The Polestar 2 single motor RWD is rated on the European WLTP test at 540 km of range. The weight just about matches too, that was probably their test vehicle.

Still, I bet they tested this under an ideal scenario type of situation, like at 20 mph or something where wind resistance is minimal. I doubt they got this figure by testing it at 65mph or the like.

Maybe like one of the early EV records for the Chevy Volt:
May 26, 2014 - 81.8 Miles On A Single Charge / No Elevation Change (averaged 23 MPH)

My fear is, if the rolling resistance is so low as to produce that kind of range the tires must have no traction at all.

Probably okay for summer, the risk is going into winter. Even with the PILOT SPORT 4 SUV, several people warned me not to use them in winter. I went from PILOT SPORT 4 SUV 255/295 to X-ice SUV 225 square for winter (on the 19" OEM wheels).

Ride quality, cornering, etc. might be some things to look at (they claim improved noise). With so many variations on MME, size and width will be important factors too, plus tire pressure for those looking at the most detailed changes in efficiency.

Summer if its not raining, and the corners aren't sharp

Exactly - tires are the easiest way to upgrade a car’s performance but, conversely, it’s also the easiest way to downgrade your car’s handling.

I personally would be careful to not torch the Mach-E’s handling and Prius-ify the vehicle for a mostly inconsequential efficiency gain. You don’t need to be Steve McQueen to feel the difference when you are in uber efficient tire territory.

I read the article and I cannot tell: is this a summer tire, or an all season tire?
