Hello,
I'm new here. I have a 2022 Mach E Iced Blue on order. I ordered on 02/11/2022. You're guess is as good as mine on when I'll get it. :)

My question is. I believe I have everything I need for my father in law and me to install an NEMA 14-50 outlet. My father in law is a retired electrical engineer. I'm only installing my outlet 10 feet from the electrical box.

I have a 14-50 outlet, 6/3 with ground wire, 2-gang metal outlet square box, 50 amp 2 pole breaker (my electric box uses Eaton) and 3/4" metal conduit. Anything else I should add?

Nice! My 240v is 60 ft. away from the box - pain in the ass to run. But it looks like you have all the supplies. All I’d add is to make sure the outlet and wires fit in the metal box. My standard 2-gang box barely fit everything and it was a real pain in the ass to install as a result. Getting something a bit deeper/wider may give you more wiggle room.

Good luck, and do remember to be safe when working with electrical. 240v will absolutely hurt you.

Since you are running metal conduit anyway, individual THHN conductors should be less expensive than 6/3 cable. And easier to pull. Pulling 6/3 through 3/4 can be a pain if you have a bend or two.

You’ll need a minimum of 2 conduit clamps to secure the pipe.

If you are using the conduit, get appropriate clamps. Also you'll need a multimeter for testing and oversized you-know-whats to be the one to use said multimeter. I was completely fine putting everything in until it came to testing, then suddenly I got nervous, even though I've replaced the entire panel in the past year on my own.

If you're up for it, I'd suggest that you tell your FiL that you want to be the hands in this so that you gain confidence. Once you've done this, you will be more equipped for future work.

which outlet? I would strongly recommend going with a Hubbel, Cooper, or other industrial grade outlet. It's a few bucks more but great peace of mind knowing it's up to the task. Don't go cheap on toilet paper, paper towels and nema 14-50 outlets.

Ensure you have the space in breaker box which I am sure you did and Ensure your home has the allowable max space once you add the 50A to your breaker. If not you will either have to add more to the home. On a side note I do know need to use metal to run these wires but you can also use PVC Piping as well if you want to go a little cheaper lol.

There are several good YouTube videos that describe how to do it including materials needed. Might be worth a look. Also make sure to follow any local code requirements.

I second the PVC....I did full PVC Run and it ended up being a major plus as we were able to heat up and bend the PVC around my garage where metal would have been a nightmare to get right.

If you already bought cable, you probably shouldn't put it inside conduit... the heat dissipation won't be right with the extra layer of insulation, and the fill% in 3/4" will make it pretty tough to pull.

The Easiest way to add a receptacle is usually below the main panel. You can cut a hole in the drywall overlapping the stud, pop out a 3/4" in the bottom of the Service enclosure, install a bushing, feed (3)6awg and (1)8awg THHN down, or use your 6/3, and fish them out of the wall into the back of your flush mount receptacle. You only need about 3' of wire run, and no conduit.

I think your plan is good. I second what others have said, go with individual wire and buy a better receptacle like Hubble or Bryant. I got a Bryant. I used a double gang box and it did fit but it was very tight. I could not go with a deeper box. If you can, it makes it easier. I went with a stainless receptacle cover since the white plastic seem to be harder to get (longer wait time) and a bit more expensive. It is in a garage so I did not really care about the color. I ordered mine at ACE Hardware (Leviton - 0S701-040). The stock receptacle cover at The Home Depot is 2.25" diameter and you will need ~ 2.4" diameter opening. Be careful tightening the screws to lock down the wires on the breaker. I overtightened mine and stripped it out. Luckily, it was only a $65 mistake.

Piggybacking on the above. Get a BRYANT 9450FR from Ebay. You'll also need a larger wallplate for the outlet. Like a Leviton S701-GY for matte or Leviton SL 701 for shiny. I like this spacious 2 gang box that you can screw into a stud, Arlington F102.

This probably goes without saying but make sure you install it where it works for your charger plus cable length to charge your vehicle!

6-3 Romex is meant to be run inside protected spaces, not in conduit. You could remove the sheath and make it in to individual wires if they are the right grade, think it needs to be THNN. Cutting out a small section of sheetrock is not too hard if you just want to run romex. You can get an extender for the box to make it big enough to hold the outlet.
