Why is full charge only 230 miles of range?

I have had the GT since September 2021 with the exact same problem. I even took it to two different dealers to see if there was a service bulletin or an upgrade available. Nothing. Although I love the car I'm not confident I can live a maximum range of 230 miles.
Perfect 1st post!

It’s like a right of passage now when you register a new user name.

Did I predict it??
Well it’s been a few days. So probably went to create a new user name, post the same question again, and watch us all lose our minds.

Cheaper than a ticket to the movie theater. ?

Yes, but you should have started a new account to quote and agree with yourself.

I feel this will become a bigger and bigger concern when people who are not familiar with EVs get them home and realize it won't meet their needs.

230 miles of range in the winter in New Jersey is not a problem with the car, it is a problem with lack of understanding regarding how EVs work. The only solution is to get an ICE car, or get an EV with longer range. And there are not many EVs that can go farther than 230 miles in the winter in NJ. The list is very short, and most start with the letter T.

Unfortunately more and more people are learning this the hard way.

Drive more conservatively, you'll get better range.

That’s all true but you have to understand that the reason why the numbers go so high is it the manufacturers control the conditions under which the ratings are created

Under any critical analysis of gasoline or electric usage right now they will all be considered 20% optimistic under real world conditions which is exactly what this gentleman is finding

That’s only if he’s not going uphill with a wind and really gunning it because then he can cut another 40% off

facts
The manufacturers don't control the conditions under which the tests are done. Those conditions are specified by the EPA. They design the tests, they design the conditions. There is some leeway of which specific tests and results that the manufacturer can choose to publish, but they're all derived from the EPA mandated tests. Some manufacturers like to publish the most optimistic number, and others like to use the more conservative number (under promise but over deliver).

My personal rubric is to take the EPA MPG or range test results and subtract 10% to 15%. Over the last 25 years and 8 cars it's been pretty accurate, including for the Bolt EV I had. I tend to have a lead foot, too.

I have always been able to get significantly better mileage than the EPA and manufacturers test results.

I got my GT and it is really nice. What a powerful machine and very comfortable.

I was counting on a usable range of 270 miles so for some of my planned trips I would not have to charge for a round trip if I didn't have too. However now after multiple charges the most I can get on the range after 100% charge is around 230 miles. This is 15% less than my expectation. I have read the threads on cold weather but it has not been that cold here.

Do other users find the same thing? The real range you can charge up to is only 85% of the estimated range from Ford?

I live near the coast in Northern California. Maybe, once in a while the temp drops into the 30s at 4:00am. Most of the time in winter - 50's and 60's. Not anybody's definition of cold. I've owned the car since November. Never been able to charge above 230 mile range.

My results have also been in line with yours, really has been my only disappointment with the car. When it got colder than freezing temps, saw range drop as low as 160 miles. Spring is here and back over 200. Since I took delivery in October, haven’t seen what the range is during summer months so will be interesting to see if it can do any better than 230.

EVs should use heat pumps not heating elements for cabin comfort. I switched from a traditional hot water tank to an hybrid tank and the savings are ridiculous; used to use 13kWh a day and now use 2kWh a day. I suspect much of the extra consumption in cold weather is the heater.

Eventually the Mach-E and other EVs should have both a heat pump and E-Heat for use when it's too cold for the pump to do the job.

nj here - even in a week of 60's-70's ambient temps I never exceed 230 miles of total indicated range. I accept that and am fine with the result.
