First Turo Booking: Pray for me

It went smooth. Came back almost the way I gave it to them. There were a few crumbs that weren’t mine so cleaning could’ve been better. I did get a 12v battery fault notification and my car sounds were coming in high pitched. After 3 days, the notification (so far) finally went away today. Drove the car for 30 mins and charged it to 80% so hopefully that helped. So it appears the client might’ve left the accessory power on for a long period of time. But overall it went well as long as I don’t have to pay for a new 12v.

Doesn’t Turo provide the insurance while rented? I’m not sure, but I thought that’s how it works.

Yeah I didn’t even see them once on pickup or drop off; everything was contactless. Guy had a 5 star rating. Which put my mind at ease. I have another booking in two weeks. Hopefully the luck carries over.

We are both a Turo Host (not for our Mach-E though LOL) and we use Turo all the time (I personally rent a Mach-E from a host in Sacramento frequently). I can tell you that Turo is a bit of a mixed bag, but can be very effective. Here are our recommendations:

• First and foremost, you need to separate yourself from the car. This will save you headaches in the long run. Turo does provide coverage, I would recommend starting off with the $0 deductible until you are more comfortable. From there just remind yourself a car is nothing but a bunch of parts, and parts can be replaced.
• Next, I would not go with the Turo Recommended Pricing (Auto Pricing). Start by pricing yourself a little high (this weeds out discount renters).
• Also don't accept all renters, I would disable instant book for the GT and vet your Renters. Look if they have been rated, see what their hosts have commented on, and message the guest. Have a little bit of a conversation about what they are doing and why to get a feeling of how they will take care of your card.
• To weed out joy riders make sure you have a few days minimum (i.e. 3 days). People are less likely to rent a car just for a Joy ride if they can't rent it for only a day. And most trips, or other legitimate rental needs for anything that is not a Pickup or a Van requires more than 1 or 2 days. (Plus you can make an exception if someone messages you).
• Finally be prepared to be an EV Educator and advocate, 95% of the time this will be the first time the guest has driven an EV so they are sure to have LOTS of questions, how to charge, where to charge, etc. We would recommend building up some Canned Messages that you store somewhere to provide this type of information.

The best is to be over-communicative on your expectations, as well as your process and procedures for pickup, drop off, approval, inspection etc. I hope this helps, and if you have questions you can message me (over a year as a host now).

Just found this thread, but is there a reason someone needed $$ that badly, and still buys a ~$40-$70k car to rent out? I can understand a basic Toyota Corolla, but the few bucks doesn't seem worth the hassle, but that's me I guess.

I suppose if someone just didn't care and it can be trashed, but like others have mentioned, your own insurance will no way cover this and what if the renter didn't buy the insurance thinking their own will cover it?

Outside of someone starting a business to rent cars, seems like a person would be 1 accident/issue away from getting the car totally messed up. More like a matter of when vs. if.

Of course, you're $270 richer than me which after taxes, maybe $135 in CA now. Still looks not worth it though, maybe that's why I won't be doing this and others can make the side $$.

Maybe I read too many of those articles you read about parties at AirBnB or what not.

I would advise your customers not to use the accessory mode. Blinking green light = battery draining.

No there’s no taxes on my 270. Only if you go above 20k in earnings do you have to fill out tax forms.
