I'd strongly consider a hybrid in addition to my EV, but so far (i'm jinxing myself) it's been nothing short of a great experience having an EV.

my ideal vehicle would go 75 miles on battery only and have ICE capability for long trips. The RAV4 Prime is a nice fit but are impossible to find unless you are willing to pay a very high premium.

I totally agree with this sentiment. Personally I think the government and industry are attacking the EV market all wrong. If they focussed on PHEV that did 60-70 miles on a charge that would eliminate the vast majority of private vehicle gas miles. Most people do the bulk of their trips within 10-40 miles from home. Focus the resources on PHEV and we reduce emissions a lot quicker plus it wouldn't rely on a charging network.

So I have a situation that I am not sure how I am going to handle. SO Just about 2 years ago I put in a reservation for a Bronco. I had a very early (first 12 hour) reservation, so when they started shipping last spring and being a very high number at my dealer I sold my F150 in April as prices for use cars had gotten really high (didnt realize they would stay high). I figured I would be good without a car for a couple months while i waited as I was working from home. Well a month later all hell broke lose with the Bronco hard tops and I was told I wouldn’t be seeing my car until some time in 2022.

So I guess I got super lucky but after weighing my options I decided to get a Mach-e. Found a dealer who sold it at xplan pricing. I figured with the tax incentive and used car prices being high I wouldn’t really lose financially if i had it for 6 months. Well over a year later I still have it and after all this time my bronco was just built this past week and is supposed to arrive first week in august. Though now I am honestly not sure I want to keep it.

I never thought this would be the case. While I was really interested in the Mach-e to try out eletric, I am not crazy about the exterior looks. I do like the interior, the sound system and honestly the way it drives and performs is amazing. I drove my wife’s jeep a couple weeks ago and hitting the gas and having it do nothing was a bummer, lol. I have really come to love all aspects of driving an electric vehicle. Except for reload trips. Ram into a ton of issue trying to find charging in Rhode island that really blew up our plans.

But the acceleration, the upgradability, the quiet, the handling, all of these things have been great. I also finally found a real use for the frunk and use it to store all my smelly mountain biking gear instead of keeping it in the car.

SO I am not sure I can go back to an ICE vehicle. Gas prices aren’t helping. I am considering taking delivery, maybe drive the bronco for the the last month of summer and then sell it and helping to pay down the mach-e. I actually I am seriously considering a rivian. I did put in for a reservation a couple months ago and think at this point it would better suit my needs. Many of the wants from a more rugged vehicle but all the pluses I have enjoyed in the Mach-e.

So not sure where this is going to land, but interested if anyone else has done the switch back.
If my wife had a Jeep already, I’d keep the MME and never look back. The best 2-car garage today is a sporty electric daily driver and a utilitarian ICE vehicle like a Jeep or Bronco. All your bases are covered! (Bonus points if the Jeep is a manual). Getting the Bronco now would be like having 2 Jeeps.

I read a few years ago, 1/3 of EV owners (Cali?) go back to gas.
I wonder what percentage of those folks are just flipping cars for tax credits........

Get an Escape PHEV. You can get one for as little as $35k. I have one as my commuter and it's essentially an EV 90% of the time. When we took it on a 2000 mile trip in the Spring, we averaged 42mpg in an 4000lb 2 row SUV. The only thing the Rav4 has that it doesn't is AWD.

I don't see myself going back. This is my first EV and I am loving it. With so many other car companies having EVs why go back. I got a GTPE to look forward to or a Porsche Taycan, skies the limit now. I can even trade my ICE CUV for a Jeep Wranger when they go full electric eventually.

After 2 hybrids, 2 plug-in hybrids (me) and a plug-in hybrid (him), Sonny Boy and I are now both with EVs. ...and one of us just might pick up an ICE or phev truck in a year or so. Why? ...because we enjoy cross-country camping trips and now we are talking about buying a higher-end teardrop trailer, and you just can't tow a trailer, even a teardrop one, in an EV for more that 100 or so miles before refueling.

No, not going back. Actually within 9 months of getting our MME, we are dumping all the ice cars we have and becoming EV only household (2 MME and a Tesla MYP.

Yes! what i always wanted as well. I think there may be a Volvo/Polstar ext. range hybrid (50?). Its crazy you can't get 100 on battery and gas for extended drive.

I think these 15-20 batteries are silly to have.

No, not at all. I have a home charger and my life is very easy with the EV now. We have also ditched the ICE second car and have an iD3 for my wife (she absolutely loves it).

Not a simple yes or no question. We all have such different use and environmental scenarios. I'm on the NH coast. Hardly any public charging yet but everything here is so close. In my 12 mile work commute I pass through three towns. I'm six miles from the MA border, 45 miles from Boston and 60 miles from Portland, ME. The lakes and mountains are about an hour and a half away (90 miles or so). I'm averaging 3-4 miles per kWh even with AC on the highway so I have yet to need a public charger on any trip I've taken.

I do like the idea of having something for hauling and towing though. But even there my ideal choice would still be something like a Rivian (a friend has one on order actually).

At this point in time, with the stops on ICE production and sales getting close to just ten years away, I don't think I would invest in one. The only gas type vehicle I might consider is a PHEV. At least with those you always have the battery option.

Last thoughts: When the Zombie Apocalypse hits, rather than fighting for gas, it will be nice to just whip out solar panels to power my ride ??

No chance I go back. We have 2 EVs and are very happy.

For the comments wanting 75 mile range then gas hybrid. We started with a used 2019 e-Golf. Cost $18,000 in June 2021. Advertised range of 125 miles. My wife uses that primarily as her day to day driver no issues ever, because as stated most people dont drive that much in a day to day use. From a cost perspective - it makes way more sense to just rent an ICE car for those very rare times you need the range over hauling around a gas engine and tank. Let alone now you have to maintain 2 systems.

Focus the resources on PHEV and we reduce emissions a lot quicker plus it wouldn't rely on a charging network.
If instead of high end $50k cars we focused on $15-20k cars that got 150 miles the market would change a lot faster.

You will Love, Love, Love the Bronco. Great ride, no bouncy Jeep at all. The full open roof compared to the Jeeps head smashing roll bar in the middle and Badlands Sasquatch goes virtually anywhere!

Having said that, the Bronco is gone, and the MachE First Edition is getting upgraded to a GTPE that hit the dealer today but because of the recall, will sit until the fix is in.
Wife loves her MachE and almost zero maintenance, oil changes, Injectors, etc! Literally the most convenient vehicle we've owned. We do have a 21 PowerBoost F150 Platinum that is awesome, but the MachE is used daily!

nice garage! I have no doubt the bronco will be fun, especially in the summer. It’s going to be a tough call.

yeah they are VERY similar but not a fan of her Jeep. the bronco is supposed to be a much better daily driver. Also it will have 2.7 v6 vs her v4, so should be a bit peppier. Though wont touch the acceleration of the Mach-e.

Yeah, I tried charging at the Greenlots DCFC in Escanaba on a road trip to northern Wisconsin last weekend. While I sat there on the phone attempting to get assistance while the Greenlots charger took a dump, there were ten empty Tesla supercharger stalls, all begging to be generating revenue. Elon, you cannot open up that network fast enough.
we go from MN to MI every couple of years, and enjoy going through the Mi upper peninsula to avoid Chicago traffic, plus it’s a great scenic drive. With the MME (still waiting for build) and current rural charging infrastructure, I wouldn’t take that UP route.
