I've taken I-5 over the Grapevine six times now in my MME Premium (three trips up and back.) No issues. Would not consider driving long distances on the highway in unbridled mode, however.

Unbridled makes no difference at highway speeds.

Dumb question here: have HVBJB failures been noted in non-GTs? If so, is the rate of failure different?

@RMoore ... As Wyld mentioned I was fortunate enough to have someone look at the dealership technician training records and yes they have 2 technicians that are trained. I could tell in the demeanor of the technician that he was excited to have the opportunity to work on the car. While experience is obviously something lacking, I felt that the drive, dedication and eagerness was present. I have hired a number of software developers over the years and let me tell you - the worst are those who went to college for it just because they couldn't decide on what they wanted to do. The best were those fresh out of HS who had the drive and motivation to learn. I feel good about those techs.

I wasn't going to but I was told that I would be in trouble if I didn't. Also it was a pending OTA for me a couple weeks ago. I held off for a long time, but ultimately there's some risk involved when they have queued up a recall on your vehicle. If I would have knowingly ignored the recall I might have been liable for damages. It was something I weighed heavily.
Very thoughtful and sensible replies!

Yes, AWD extended battery models have been reported. I believe recently there was a report of a 2WD model as well (correct me if I’m misremembering). I don’t have statistics, so I can’t comment on rates of failure for each model/trim. There is a thread somewhere on forum member reports, but I don’t think Ford has released statistics. 🤷‍♂️🐩

Most definitely however the likelihood with a GT is higher because of the power draw, which is much higher.

Oh yeah. There’s a thread here tracking it. More or less, the rate of failure is higher with the speedier ones and lower with the slower trims, but none of them have skated free of this.

A coworker of mine who had a used 2021 Premium (I believe AWD but not sure) had a SVS the week after the recall updates went out OTA. I feel bad for him. I plan to tell him about this forum but haven't had the time.

Meanwhile, thanks to this forum I don't worry so much about the HVBJB, even though mine is AWD. If it fails, I know exactly what to do thanks to the experiences of everyone here, and I know to push for the new beefy part instead of just saying "fix it"

I’m about to do the Tejon Pass down to Disneyland as well to visit Mickey and Minnie with the family… I wonder if my GT will make it there and back.

This gives me some pause. I’m glad you are safe and sound and that was a very entertaining post.

But god damn!!! Cmon Ford.

Here's a couple more examples

https://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=46.61.425

https://leg.mt.gov/bills/mca/61/8/61-8-303.htm

And in California "reckless driving" is over 100mph. https://www.mit.edu/~jfc/laws.html

You are more than welcome to come to California to issue me a citation officer Rick. The point is, the HVBJB fried while driving the car. Since you're big on sending people to the owners manual can you please point out where in the manual it says not to exceed 80mph up a hill?
A hill?
That is a mountain. I think we all can agree that speeds that high, up that grade is not going to be easy on any machine. Especially a performance oriented BEV.

Track day is one thing. Climbing a mountain that fast is something else entirely IMO. How fast can we pedal a bicycle? 20 mph? How long would we last before our heart explodes if we try and pedal up that mountain at 20 mph?

Just pointing out that pass has claimed many many many victims for all sorts of reasons. All truck drivers know how brutal that pass can be. The more powerful the engine, the easier it is to overheat the system.

I am sorry you had this issue with your car and I agree that Ford may have misreprented its capabilites when they created the GT variants. They probably shouldn't be as delicate as they appear to be in respect to that component. But it is 5,000 lbs and does have a giant motor up front. I guess I am saying that it doesn't surprise me all that much that we are seeing this sort of failure.

It is a snowball effect. We all want more range and faster charging. So plop in a giant battery. Then a consequence of a big battery is high current so let's install bigger motors and it spirals on and on.

If we think this is bad, you should hear some of the stuff the engineers are talking about with electric class 8 trucks. Some are limited to 65 mph because they will cook the bus bars at higher speeds while towing 80,000 lbs.......on flat land.

Manufacturers are learning. They will figure out a way to deal with the massive thermal loads that we are subjecting these machines to.

I wish that were true here in Arizona (80 mph an automatic reckless driving ticket). I see so many people buzzing around the freeways at 80-90 mph as if they own the roads. I also see so many bodies lined up on the side of the road when driving past accident scenes.

Makes me sad because people don't realize how deadly it is to drive so aggressively.
Hollywood Brown just ended up in jail while heading to training camp. He was doing 126 on the loop 101. My wife owns a traffic school and 25 over is a reckless driving ticket in AZ.
