Hey gang. I am beyond frustrated with what I feel is a nonsensical conversation with the tech at Costco.

I purchased a set of Cross Climate 2 tires and he indicated that they cannot for "safety reasons" install these tires since they are V rated tires. He said I could drop to a "W" rated tire but since my car originally came w Y rated tires, I can only drop down one level.

I called Michelin and it seems there is some truth to the "dropping down 1 level" BUT... The GT std edition ships with the same size tire as the PE and those are in fact -V rated tires....

So -Is there honestly that much difference between the PE version and the std to make installing a v-rated tire (for cold weather months) dangerous? I'm not planning to take my car to the track in the dead of winter?!?!?

I guess it was my mistake to indicate it was a PE model. The dilemma is that they literally have no other in-stock tire but Firehawk AS V2 (W rated) that show compatible with the PE. Since this is a new tire just released in September, there are zero reviews though the specs seem good.

I was hoping to stick w Costco as the installer so I could leverage a long road hazard warranty and lots of warehouses if I do run into a road hazard issue while "on the road" pun intended.

Anyone have experience on this topic?

Seems like you'll have to go elsewhere, on the Costco website:

WILL THE COSTCO TIRE CENTER INSTALL ANY SIZE TIRE?
Costco only installs authorized tire fitments, for safety reasons. This is why we advise that, before purchasing, our customers make sure the tire(s) they select meet the following vehicle manufacturers' Original Equipment (OE) specifications.
  • It must be a size authorized by the vehicle manufacturers.
  • It has an equal or greater OE Speed Rating. Not all tires have a speed rating requirement.
  • An equal or greater OE Load Index. If you are unsure of your vehicle's fitment requirements, please contact a local Costco Tire Center sales associate.

Many other tire shops have road hazard warranty also, whether included in the price or extra charge. Tire rack has 2 year included on most tires also, and often end up cheaper than Costco.

Perhaps you should point out the top speed of a Mach-E GTPE is 130 MPH so anything higher than a H rating (130 MPH) is fine.
That's meaningless to the guy changing tires at Costco who doesn't want to lose his job.

To the OP - take the tires somewhere else, or take the wheels off the car to get the new tires installed.

It's nonsense - the OE tires are " summer tires" most summer tires only come in the higher speed ratings- I'm putting the same cross climate tires on mine- as long as they are XL rated and as someone said before the regular GT has a lower speed rating because it has all seasons. Just have to go somewhere else to get them mounted - I am lucky I ordered them from tire rack and put them on at work.

My brother in law works for Dealer Tire and has been in the tire industry for 30 years. He can get tires near cost. Since we live in Ohio I had to swap out the summer Pirelli's on my GTPE. I told him I wanted a V rated tire and he warned me that it's technically not allowed and installers are only to install tires that match the specs on the decal inside the driver's door. I wanted my dealer to install them since I had rims scratched by installers before. So I called my dealer and asked. They said they wouldn't do the install. I did use another installer and I put on the V rated tire. He recommended the Vredestein https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Vredestein&tireModel=Quatrac+Pro&partnum=445VR0QTPXL&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&autoMake=Ford&autoYear=2022&autoModel=Mustang Mach-E AWD&autoModClar= and Michelin Primacy https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Primacy+Tour+A/S&partnum=445VR0PTASXL&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&autoMake=Ford&autoYear=2022&autoModel=Mustang Mach-E AWD&autoModClar= because of better roll resistance. I went with the Verdestein's and they have been the best tire I have ever had and my range has been 300 plus while running the A/C constantly.

Wow!! This is really great info! Thank you. I have been mulling over what to do as it seems nobody has stock on the tires I want.

Indeed, the door sill stickers show a U rated tire on my specific vehicle.

I am going to look into those tires. Maybe I can work a deal w Discount Tire since I just need them to put the tires on the wheels as I am going to install them on the car myself.

if you already have the tires, go to a local tire shop to mount and balance.
OR, return the tires and consider the Continental
ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus

which are available in our size, zr, and have appropriate load rating as well as outstanding reviews

This is funny not funny. The GTPE has a top speed of 124mph. As stated above, an H-rated tire (130mph) would technically suffice. Nevermind the fact that in the time it takes a GTPE to get from 100-124mph the tires will have dry-rotted. ?

My Costco wouldn't even put any guess on mine. I don't think they knew what to do with an EV. Not helpful to you but you got farther than me. I ended up at Big O.

Yup they live by rules. Walmart too. Find another shop that can road force balance them as well so you will have a perfectly smooth ride. It will cost a little more but you will be happy.

Costco is super strict with tire sizing and ratings. Even for diameter vs OEM, it has to be under 2% I believe. I'm sure it's for liability so I don't blame the worker.

The only way around it is if you drop off a set of wheels for them to mount it onto, then put the wheels onto your car yourself. I've done this a few times with non-OEM sized tires I ordered from them.

If you're hardcore and are only using the stock wheels, put the MME on jackstands in the parking lot, take the wheels over for them to mount and put them back onto the MME yourself in the parking lot ?
