I haven't done FDRS updates since the door control module updates came out. I got the latest OTA but still have both the PCM and SOBDM available to update, along with the 4 doors. In case anyone was curious.

So just the HVAC module update? What was the OTA number?

Sorry I'm late to the party on this DIY FDRS game, but I am interested in getting set up to run my own updates. I have the laptop covered, but can anyone summarize what is currently the least expensive, yet reliable hardware for running FDRS for updates here at the end of 2022?

1) What is the least expensive, yet reliable J2534 Interface people are having success with?

2) What about a reliable power supply?

3) Also, is the $50 2-day license the way to go if only wanting to check/run updates say once a quarter or when something significant is released? With the 2-day license does the clock start ticking for the moment you activate the license? If the license is expired, can you at least still check for updates or does that need an active license?

I know I should go back and read all 115 pages and I could probably find the info, and I probably will as I have time, but appreciate if anyone up to speed can summarize. Thanks for any info.

I've had the Mongoose-Plus for a little over a year now. It's been super reliable for me, but the pricetag seems a little high for what it is. Not sure if there is a lower cost option that is reliable.

2) What about a reliable power supply?
I bought a 30A supply from Amazon, and its been stable for me. At times the car even pulling like 32-33A, so it might be a little underpowered. Definitely don't go less than 30A, and consider going higher.

I do the $50 2-day license about every 3-4 months. It starts from the minute you've paid and expires 48-hours later. I've never tried to keep it running through the expiration time. You cannot check for updates with an expired license.

I too have skipped about the most recent 75% of this thread, but I'm having good results just continuing using the intro post and few pages following. If that is leaving something major out, then someone else please write in to summarize that as well.

Other thoughts ---

The big updates seem to pushed out using a USB drive instead of hours going over the slow cable connection. Make sure you have a couple of different USB drives handy, the older ones I tried first did not work, even though there was plenty of space (Car didn't recognize the drive).

FDRS itself can sometimes be buggy, or the login server can be having trouble. Be prepared to troubleshoot it a little bit.

It's not "big updates" it's specific modules like GWM, APIM, and TCU. Those are USB updates. They also can run without a power supply cause the car will keep the 12v battery charged while they run. Coincidentally, they are big files, but other modules do have large files that require the use of a power supply to keep the battery topped up.

Do you have a link to the power supply you bought? I found a link to this 50A power supply from another thread. Seems this, along with some jumper cables and some properly crimped ring terminals that can handle 30A+ should work, right? This is less than 1/2 the price I see for the Chlore Pro-Logix 100A PS I see some others are using. It says you can dial the V from 9-15V so it seems this should work for that task.

I bought this one, which I think was recommended by someone else further up this thread:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L2K263Q/

And these cables fit great if you have the holes drilled in the frunk panel

If you hear the pumps start on the car while performing updates, you'll want to watch the voltage in the lower right corner of FDRS. If that voltage starts to pull down and keep going down, you don't have enough power, and could risk a failure mid-update.

While I'm glad the VCXNano is working for you the list of people over on the F-150 site that it has caused corrupted asbuilt reports back to the mothership is getting longer everytime somebody does an update with one. In fact it's now being removed as a recommended adapter from the F-150 thread Link here. More here.

So I would caution anyone thinking of doing updates with one of those.

It's a "stealth" issue because you won't know you messed things up until after the fact. What I mean by that is that you'll likely be able to do all the updates in your list...but when FDRS reports the changes to the cloud the Nano has the tendency to scramble the data it sends in to the cloud. Well the cloud asbuilt data is what the system uses to determine if you need a new update, and if that data is corrupted or has errors or is otherwise unrecognizable then no new updates will be queued for you in FDRS for modules with messed up data.

FDRS updated to 34.5.3 this morning.
Just installed the 34.5.3 update and now it locks up after I enter the VIN of the vehicle I want to look up. Doh!

I think I'll go reinstall 34.5.2 for now
