I have my 40,000 songs on a 1TB Samsung USB3 solid state drive. The only thing I didn't see right away is whether the Mustang noticed the playlists. Otherwise, I can see all the track information, and whatever artwork was copied to the drive.

I might play with it a bit tomorrow and post some photos.

That would be great! If it also reads playlists and I can control it with the display, this might be my solution!

FWIW, I am not very good with technology......I am old and for some unexplained reason just resist it except for the basics ,haha.......OK I have a '21 Select, if I put a usb stick into the usb port and press the "voice" button and say "usb source", it connects with the car and will begin to play the music on the usb stick.....tracks show on the screen, etc....

if I repeat the same procedure with my classic ipod I get the "not connected message"......

I don't get why the usb stick will work and connect, but the ipod will not.....maybe someone with more knowledge than me can explain...

The iPod tech is fairly old as far as tech is concerned. At some point there’s a decision to make it obsolete.
I tried disk mode in my old iPod classic and it wouldn’t connect. USB works great, along with playlists. There’s a lot of free tools out there to generate m3u playlists that can be read by a lot of audio systems.

The old iPods use an outdated file system so the car's computer simply can't read the directory information on the iPod. Basically, it's like if someone put pictograms on the tabs of the file folders in your file cabinet, re-filed everything in those folders according to the pictograms, did not tell you anything about how to decipher the pictograms or how they relate to the informaiton within the folders, and asked you to find something. ??

Flash memory is so cheap nowadays, I’m not sure why anyone would go through the hassle of trying to get an obsolete iPod to work. Just get one of these and leave it plugged into the USB port.

Thank you all (and others not listed here) for your interest and input on this thread. I’m starting to realize that maybe I need to let go of my old tech in favor of one of the several options suggested here.

I am a sentimental sort and the old iPod has some meaning for me (a gift from my parents & siblings for a personal accomplishment) so it’s difficult for me to just cast it aside without trying to find some way to make it work.

When the car arrives and I finally settle on something, I will post it here. Thank you all again!

I have some old iPods that I loved. They sit forlornly next to one of my computers and stare in envy at my iPhone when I am at the computer. They’re probably also envious of my USB drives. They used to go for every car ride. Now they are the red-headed stepchildren. ??

connecting my iPod to a car is not a new problem. Back then my car had no USB port. i ended up with a solution that still works: a Belkin iPod Tune FM. Basically it turns the iPod into a radio transmitter!
