Alex on Autos just had a great video on the BZ4X with some great details and views of the inside. Obviously, it’s still a concept and some things might change.

Some highlights (vs MME):
  • Looks like ventilated seats
  • Electrochromic roof
  • Button for 1PD

I wonder if it'll have 400V or 800V charging. And of course range, battery size, and 0-60 time are yet to be announced.

And one of the hardest things to evaluate (even on released cars) is phone as a key and how well design and reliable the phone and watch apps are.

Looks promising!

You do understand that prototypes rarely make it to production the same way they make it to the show floor, right?
In other words, it is stupid to compare a production vehicle to a prototype. There is no price point to meet on a prototype. You wanna put unobtanium seats in that prototype? Sure thing, we can get you one set of seats. You wanna put inobtanium seats in the production model? How many people do you think are gonna be able to buy a car with $17,000,000 worth of SEATS? 500 kWh battery for the prototype? Sure. In the production car? no one is going to want to drive a “sports car” that weighs 18,000 pounds.

in short, get back to me when they actually produce one for sale.

When Toyota announced it they said it’s about 99% close to production so what you see is what will make production, maybe with some small tweaks here and there.

The problem I see is that the small tweaks would be things like eliminating the electro chromatic roof and ventilated seats to meet a price point.

seeing as that this would compete with the VW ID4 and Mustang mach E I would highly doubt they eliminate ventilated seats

Like I said, once they are delivering them to buyers, then we can talk about comparisons. As far as I am concerned, this is nothing more than Elon blowing his horn about FSD being right around the corner.

Except Elon is known as a con man and being full of shit. Toyota has been around for a very long time, I trust them more than Tesla.

Toyota's new offering appears to allows DCFC only twice in a row. Your 3rd charge you get 33 KW +/- for the entire charge. You L2 charge and you get your 2 FC's back. That is a wall on another level. I see it being a big selling point. ;)

I heard somewhere else that it might be based on DCFC KwH received (equaling to about 2 DCFCs)? Either way, those restrictions limit the vehicle to being a local commuter.

Exactly no trip machine there which takes away half the functionality of why you buy one. Maybe not half for most but its no plus. These walls are definitely something I will research next time. Toyota the meek.

I think it only charges for 5 seconds he said at the end.

It will not charge? Did not catch that (timestamp?). 14.5 hours is what I remember . Mach-e is 10.5 hours best time. Hope they fix the DCFC curve and let him test it again.

His spreadsheet is starting to look impressive. Spreadsheet

I've read a ton about that car and seen a bunch of videos on it. My general take away: For the price, so not worth it. I get the impression Toyota is being lazy and then spinning the car's shortcomings as "purposeful engineering"

As for Alex on Autos; I like AOA's level of review detail but I feel he is really biased by his personal off-grid circumstances (hence his heavy support of PHEVs). Ironically, he is a big reason I bought the Mach-E.
