Or they'll just sell more of what already has a built-in range extender... PHEVs.
Can a small-ish 4 cylinder efficiently power something like a Lincoln Navigator at 70mph highway cruising? Seems like the EV portion of PHEV is underwhelming on most of those, but I'm imagining an EV first and hybrid second, where the gas engine is almost exclusively for highway cruising.

That is what this is. The Ram REV will have some sort of range extender option. Not sure what that is going to be though. They have been quite tight lipped about it. I wonder if they are going to try some sort of fuel cell range extender or will have a way to lease or rent an extra battery pack for longer trips. Or something else entirely.... Curious.... ?

You pick! These were 10 of 'the best' from the 90's/00's. I'm sure it's time for a reboot.

I believe I saw a patent Rivian submitted for an separate battery pack that would sit in the bed, adding additional range to the existing battery. But since they still haven't come out with the max pack, I doubt that will be coming soon.

Updated with link to patent/description for Rivian Auxiliary Battery Module :

I honestly have no idea. But I will never purchase another EV with 270 EPA or 400v architecture. I drive 30k+ a year and winter range is unacceptable. Yesterday I had to drive to a client 180 miles away and I couldn't make it so I had to stop each way. The first charger said "Come Back Later" - "Power Conservation Mode". I then had to go 15 miles away from my destination to grab another charger and repeat on return.

Additionally, I live on 5 acres of property, have many trailers and I'm always hauling around server equipment, racks, yard equipment etc. Right now I have to go home, get the Audi, with a tow hitch, go back to work with a trailer. I'm over it. I miss having a truck.

I think that most people who own EVs forget that there's a massive portion of America that is rural and trucks are almost required. Additionally, range is important for a lot of people. We aren't all city dwellers with offices within walking distance. My stops yesterday added 1 hour to an already 2.5 hour drive, each way. I value my time and don't want to waste it searching for a charger and then waiting an additional 45 minutes. As long as it's under 100k and has the range and architecture advertised, I'm all in.
500 miles is not going to happen for the masses. An edge case for ~$150K sure... but not at ICE prices.

Batteries simply cost too much and will for at least the next decade... maybe longer.

I'm in on the "right tool for the job" approach... and Yes, I am aware not everybody can afford this.

  • Have a v8 truck/SUV... they can do things no EV vehicle can do well.
  • Have an EV for daily... reality check, almost everybody averages less than 30 mile a day. There will be a day, where DCFC exists at nearly the same density as interstate gas stations.

Exactly, our Mach-E is on track for 15k miles its first year. Our 8 year old Highlander (with 80k) miles is on track for less than 2k miles. This setup should cover our driving needs for the next 10 years, I may try to stretch the cars for that, then who knows what we are shopping for in 10 years!

Got my reservation in, hopefully the cost isn’t ridiculous or go up by 20k by the time my reservation able to be converted like my lightning res did.
Production won't be until 2024, so prices may change.

I haven’t seen any pricing info yet, but may have missed it. I more meant I hope I don’t get priced out. I miss owning a truck - but don’t want to go back to gas for a daily and need about a 250-300mile range so all options are ~80k which I’m not willing to spend. Hoping for something <$60k.

RAM released specs today.

800v architecture
Motor disengagement for highway travel and range
A massive 229kW battery (500 miles of range)
Power reversing for home or charging another EV
XR model with the generator engine for even more range.
0-60 in 4.4 seconds
14000 lbs towing capacity
10 minutes to charge 110 miles.
Personally, I really miss having a HUD, and they are giving it a 10" configurable HUD ?

Styling is still not as good as the concept ?

Those are some sexy numbers though.

Now that is impressive, and will make me seriously consider getting my first pickup truck. I considered the R1T, but the range isn't good enough with the standard pack. The extended pack is still smaller than what will be in the RAM. Gotta love free market competition!

The 229kWh battery is the long range version. That should translate into 200 - 250 miles of range when towing, which I think would be usable if you need to tow. The standard range version is a 168kWh battery with estimated 350 miles of range.

The specs would be great if it was out now, but it doesn't come out until late 2024 and I think it's likely that production will be limited until 2025. I'm on the list but I'm hoping we'll have plenty of details on the next gen Lightning by then.

229KWH battery -- that is gonna weigh more than the Hummer easily.
