I recently had a few software updates applied at the dealer, including the BCM module. This added the electronic front release functionality with the door keypad (which I'm very thankful for), however the button on the Sync 4a screen is still greyed out. In the Fordpass app the frunk button is not even there.

So I contacted support over the Ford pass chat, and thought I would post the transcript here.

TLDR - Per the Fordpass guide, no models built before 7/7/21 will see a frunk button in Fordpass. This is the first I have heard of a hard cut off date for this functionality so I thought I would share it here.

I have repeatedly said that I think there is some hardware limitation that is preventing ford from enabling the remote frunk release in Job 1s. This pretty much seals the deal (assuming the CSR is correct). Yes, I realize there is an “unofficial hack”, meaning that the latest code for some modules has the effect of enabling the electric frunk release from the keypad, fob, and sync screen, but nowhere has ford officially acknowledged, endorsed, or officially made that available to owners through normal channels (such as an SSM/TSB, or an OTA).

I sure hope this is just a case of a poorly informed CSR ?

Perhaps, but I don't understand what hardware limitation there could possibly be when the electronic mechanisms are all there and so many functions of the car can be controlled through Fordpass already. My ape brain only sees ones and zeros being the difference.

I said it once, and i'll say it again. Ford started selling this car 2-3 years too early. It obviously was not finished.

I couldn’t begin to speculate on what the hardware difference is, but there is SOME difference between Job 1s and later iterations, otherwise we wouldn’t be having the discussion.

If the dealer did it, is it really an unofficial hack?

The manual handle opens my frunk just fine, thanks. For me this is a complete non-issue. I do not understand why people get so obsessed about a feature that is not part of their car.
I can understand why they may want it in that they do not have to enter their car to open the frunk. As for myself I am with you as my Frunk has been opened once in my 12 months of ownership just to make sure it was there!

As someone who has been a big Frunk fan from the beginning, I will add that the manual release doesn’t always work well for me. I am not one to mind minor inconveniences and if there was no other way, so be it. My own experience has been that it grew quite cumbersome to open my door while carrying heavy groceries in order to pull the lever twice and then walk around to put my bags in the frunk. I had found that half the time, I did not unlatch it correctly the second time and would have to walk back and do it again. That made the frunk not worth using. Why have it at all? I am still very excited with finding that I had access using the door code and I hope everyone will be able to at least get this. It was a game changer and I really enjoy having this feature. I personally am good now, but I could understand why others would want to have PAAK access as well.

I would take this with a grain of salt. What they mean is that it was started to be enabled on 2021 Job 2s and if you have a 2021 Job 1 you won't see it, cause duh you don't have that feature enabled yet. I think @Administrator should change title of this post or lock it, because it's very misleading.

CSRs don't have this info. Also OP is bad at understanding CSRs, cause that's not what they said.

Or at least change the title from "Ford confirms" to "Ford CSR confirms". That little bit of context makes a huge difference.

I don't even think they confirmed it, if you read it, it's not a correct reply to OPs question, it's just confirms what we already know and that is 2021 Job 1s don't have the feature. CSRs don't know anything! Level 1 tech support is not to be trusted! lol

They didn’t confirm anything. They simply stated that it’s not activated on those earlier models, which we all know. Nowhere did they say it would never be activated. You can make the assumption that it won’t but there’s no confirmation of anything.

Because technology, whether it works or not, is fun.
