Do you think it’s likely that the 5 second acceleration limit will change?

Likelihood of altering/removing 5 Second limiter?

What a thread this has been! Ordered a ‘21 GTPE fully loaded and then read this 5 second stuff last night and backed out. Read a bit more, and went back in. I take the delivery this week. The test drive in that GT PE (before I read any of this stuff) made my jaw drop (former Tesla Model 3 owner) so I was very upset when I backed out. But I am going back in and that’s it!

Hey, I test drove a Model 3 performance, and I know on paper it has better performance than the GTPE, but it actually didn’t feel much quicker. The GTPE is a great daily, and it has better than decent acceleration, and is built well. However, I, and others, feel like it could of had more performance to justify its name.

In the real world, on the streets, it’s got enough kick. It’s just not a passing monster on the freeway.

Thank you for sharing. Very much appreciated.

To be brutally honest, if someone driving in front of me is already doing ~25 mph above the posted speed limit (doing ~50 mph in a 25 mph zone, doing ~90 mph on a 65 mph road), passing that person by going even faster is not only potentially dangerous (especially on USA highways where many drivers aren’t always in full control of their cars but still want to ram them forward at max speeds they can go), but also invites an opportunity for me to meet the cop hiding away and contribute to the fine quota for the day for them. No thank you. I would instead just let them go, or follow them keeping safe distance if I am in the driving lane. And this scenario should never be happening in the passing lane to begin with.

That’s how I drive personally, but again, everyone does this differently.

I am pretty sure that most city road passing will be handled by the MME just fine as it typically happens at speeds below 65 mph and even that is generous. The GTPE felt blisteringly fast from 0-75 mph on every single flooring event in the test drive. That’s more than plenty for the city driving enthusiast in me

To be fair, I didn’t exceed 75 mph during the test drive. Still, for the highway passing, where most people are making noise about this boost cap, the highest passing speed I have personally hit in my Model 3 was ~95 mph and that was a very rare occurrence. And I didn’t have to reach that speed to pass the car in a blink of an eye. If that were the case, most cars sold today are not even close to being sufficiently quick to make it to the highways :). I have indeed done 80 mph / 85 mph passing many times in the Tesla, and I am quite sure that the MME will also handle that just fine. I am going to find out soon!

And anything above that, like I said above, I “won’t” be passing, unless there’s an emergency.

Thus, the boost cap being “felt” above 80 mph wouldn’t really upset me, as I’m almost at my top driving speed of 90 mph which I rarely, if ever, plan to exceed on the roads. I hope I never find myself in a situation where I must and if I do, my first instinct would be to seek opportunities to slow down and not accelerate.

And that right there is the crux of the matter, I feel. I can’t imagine that many car drivers, even the spirited ones, drive any faster than the speeds I mentioned above on a regular basis. That number is probably less than 10%. And we are talking about a consumer grade EV after all. Those drivers who want to reach higher speeds than these at a moment’s notice aren’t most of us.

But the boost cap slowing my acceleration starting 70 mph though? That would be most certainly annoying not to me but to a very large population of drivers and I’m sure Ford would have to close shop if it was that egregious. I keep hearing that most people “feel” it closer to 80 mph, no?

Depends on what you mean by “feel it.”

Peak tq for this car happens around 30 mph. When you accelerate, tq is what you “feel.”

There is a steep drop off from 30-50 mph, then it keeps dropping off from there to the point by 70 mph it’s accelerating like a normal car and by 100 like a full size van.

There is no magic cliff, just a steady decline as speeds increase.

Every car is like this, but our decline in acceleration as speed increases is significantly more dramatic.

Does this matter? Depends on how fast you drive.

I can tell you that I have driven the Model 3 (rwd) for 5 years straight. And I felt that the GT PE 0-70 mph was faster and more dramatic. I believe you that the power is gradually reduced, I just didn’t feel anything that made me want to pull over and walk away. In two days I’ll be able to do this again and I hope I continue to feel the same lol but I’ll post here if I start to notice it. :)

Everyone here felt the drop off and still bought the car.

But it’s definitely noticeable and we don’t like it. But we don’t hate it enough to buy something else. And none of those faster BEVs we compare to have the same violent acceleration off the line that we have. Multiple people who’ve driven the EV6 GT for example say the Mach E GT feels faster off the line.

That is really well said! "we don't like it, but we don't hate it enough to not buy this car".

I actually really like the "features" offered by Kia in their EV6 and it's a pretty good looking car, IMO. I particularly enjoyed the HUD in it. But somehow I still do not feel comfortable buying a Kia, especially their EV. Maybe in another 5 years.

Pretty much exactly this. The EV6 GT is fun, and performance wise eats the GTPE for lunch, but inside it “feels” like a Kia to me. Just a little cheap.

The Tesla M3P, to me, isn’t fun, but performance wise eats the GTPE for lunch. And it’s cramped in there. I know it’s not a direct competitor, but it’s what I’ve tried.

The GTPE does soooo many things right, but the mid to semi high speed acceleration is pretty lacking. And Ford did all these “track based” adverts. I feel like we wouldn’t have been as disappointed if the called it the GT Special, and not played up the “take it on the track!” thing.

If Kia and Hyundai are eating Ford GT vehicles for lunch as you’re saying, Dearborn MI should be ashamed of themselves.

Model 3 isn’t a good comparison with ME. Model Y certainly is. And I can tell you that if it had blind spot and cross traffic alert, I’d never buy a Ford EV, having owned a Model 3 for 4 years, let alone Kia Hyundais. Just being very honest. It’s got everything else going for it. Better battery tech. Better range management. Better infrastructure. Better performance. Better MMI. More spacious. And same price if not a bit cheaper at times. I can get behind its boring looks and spartan interior and no CarPlay, like I did with my model 3. The QA issues are honestly overblown. My ‘18 was super tight and cost me $0 until I traded it in. Saw SC once for misbehaving rear view camera which had a recall.

but…it doesn’t have the safety features I wanted, so I am willingly giving Ford a chance by buying their highest tier EV possible for real money. It deserves a first chance but hopefully it’s not the last one.

Or Kia should be proud for making a really fast car.

But yeah, our top end acceleration is shameful. And yet it’s still a low 12 second 1/4 mile SUV. Still faster than 97% of all the v8 ICE Mustangs ever built.

I know the model 3 isn’t a fair comparison, but I haven’t driven a model Y.

Got the GT PE today and I am glad to say that to me (a very normal car owning consumer), this 5s is total non issue. The car is too fast for me as it is. I’m glad that I did not cancel the GT PE plan after reading this thread!!

Really glad you like it. Again, the car is a great daily driver. Certainly the nicest car I’ve ever owned. The 5 second acceleration limitation is only something that I really notice maybe once a week, but when it happens, it’s noticeable, and makes me sad for what the car could have been.

All that to say, having driven or been a passenger in some of the competition in the space, all things being equal, I prefer the GTPE.

Yup, I ordered a GTPE and it arrived on Friday but I decided not to take delivery as too many negatives built up and I ordered a model y performance instead. 5 second limit, no more full tax rebate, the higher MSRP, and change to NACS made me decide to wait a few years until that's sorted out
Great choice. Easy learning curve on using screen or voice for m

After driving my wifes new AWD model Y I am disappointed in getting the GTPE instead of a performance y. Her tesla beats me in a quarter miles and it only has 385hp. In addition she is able to get added power on a $2000 performance boost. Cost $53000. Minus $7500 tax credit.

Tesla is a fantastic car. There’s a reason it’s selling so much.

After having driven a Model 3 for 5 years, I just expected a bit more from Model Y in terms of looks and features. They’ve nailed the price point, range, spaciousness, MMI tech, and overall infrastructure. No blind spot alert. No rear cross traffic alert. No CarPlay. No android auto. Possibly the worst media player, awkward screen positioning, and lack of 5G (they’re selling cars with LTE in 2023?!). These things make me feel like they’ve essentially become “people movers” like some of the brands starting with H and T. If they address these issues in their future generation and make the cabin a bit more luxurious, it’s an easy choice for me.

I went with GTPE purely for a change. It’s got decent build quality (more or less the same as Model Y in recent years), but their doors are worse (felt too light), tech is worse but not atrocious, but the drive quality is top notch. And infrastructure is growing (that’s not a ford problem but a non Tesla EV issue so can’t blame Ford for that). Range estimation is a bit more realistic than Tesla. And thank god it doesn’t look like a shoe box!
