Auto makers are still fixated on selling their ICE inventory. Just look at the deals and rates they're giving on the dying tech. Ford has been running truck and SUV TV adds here in the east since late spring. All ICE, no EV's, a strategy that makes you have to search out EV info. You know how we love low hanging fruit.

In my first meeting with the dealer I bought from he knew a little about Tesla, but nothing about the rest of his EV competition. I'm no genius but I do know how to find what I need to know. Unfortunately most folks ain't wired that way and won't find out about these great vehicles until they're "low hanging fruit".
They’re fixated on selling ICE still because that’s where 93% of their sales come from and 100% of their profit comes from.

If you were in charge, what would you be fixated on?

If I leave home at 100% I'll have to charge twice to arrive Scottsdale, AZ from San Diego, CA, 370 miles one way.
You are only getting 145 miles on a full charge? Yee-ouch!

I think it's simply the price. Both the Mach-E and Lightning are just too expensive compared to Tesla right now.

Model Y Performance is $54,490 - $7,500 tax incentive* = net $46,990
GTPE is about $70,000 (depending on options) - $3,750 tax incentive* = net $66,250

That $~20k difference is huge. ($~15k not including the tax incentive still huge)

(*if you qualify)

UPDATE:
Say you don't want Performance, the cheapest Model Y is $47,740 before tax incentive, comparably equipped Mach-E (Premium, AWD, ER) is $59,295. $11,555 diff ($~15k w/ tax incentive)

Yes and no. Some important data at the end of the article. Lots of “downs” year over year.

Tesla sold a crapload due to significant price reductions.

Other brands got a bump from the new tax credit.

And as soooooooo many new BEVs flood the market in a few years, it’s going to be a crowded market.

So while overall sales may be up, the individual models may suffer due to competition.

You can only deep discount for so long.

Data-
BEV registrations in the US (select models) - January-May 2023:

  • Tesla Model Y - 167,900 (up 103%) and 37.5% share
  • Tesla Model 3 - 87,200 (up 18%)
  • Volkswagen ID.4 - 14,094 ("more than tripled")
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E - 10,948 (down 29%)
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 - 10,406 (down 3.4%)
  • Tesla Model X - 10,263 (up 7%)
  • Kia EV6 - 6,780 (down 29%)
  • Tesla Model S - 5,335 (down 59%)
  • Nissan Ariya - 3,501 (new)
  • Toyota bZ4X - 2,985 (up 1,558%)
  • Subaru Solterra - 2,442 (new)
  • VinFast VF 8 - 128
128 people actually got a VinFast?

Just bought a 2023 Mach-e Select Vapor Blue, looked at Tesla Model Y and think they have a lot of competitive advantages but I liked the Mach-e styling and interior way more and like the way it drives better than the Y. The Mach-e is also less money when taking into account the new $3K rebate and 2.9% rate. Traded in my Cadillac CT5. Had a Bolt for a couple of years before that and took it on a road trip from Miami to NC. It was an adventure with a charging rate of only 50kwh. The Mach-e should be way better, but it does that a lot of planning. The dealer I bought it from only had 2 Select's, way more Premiums and GT's, but the price difference is crazy. It's nice to have choices now after a couple of years at the mercy of the dealerships.

So have you tried taking the Mach E to Phoenix or Vegas Or are you just assuming you’ll dislike the experience? Others on this forum said the same thing until they actually road tripped their Mach E and it changed their opinions.
Several 1000 mile round trip road trips to see my son. Only can take the Mach E without my wife since the trip adds an hour to 1.5 hours each way. It may not bother some people but it definitely bothers others.

Personally, I would rather road trip in an EV, even if it's a bit slower. Sure, I can plow through a long drive faster with an ICE, but I really like not having to stop at smelly gas stations. Also, every day I am seeing repercussions of climate change. I want to do my part to slow that down, and help push EVs to be more accessible practical in the future. I can slow down a bit now for the sake of the future.
Agreed, something of a challenge to do it, which I enjoy but def not as fast a trip as ICE but it is more relaxing.

I have taken several trips and haven’t had any issues. Me real fear is the HVBJB breaking down on some trip.

to be fair if I wasn’t retired and had my 3 young kids in the car , adding an extra 90 minutes on an 8 hour trip, I wouldn’t be so quick to take an EV

I have 2 kids and 2 dogs, and I think the longer stops would be fine to let them all stretch their legs.

And herein lies the problem. Why does it all have to be crossovers and "SUVs?" Surely we can get another body type.
Seriously!

I recently sold a 6yr old Prius Prime for what I paid for it 4yrs ago. I wanted a small, nimble, and fast EV.

A vast majority of EVs out there don't fit that criteria (or if they do, they don't fit my budget). I ended up getting a Model 3 Performance. I'd rather have gotten a 2dr EV sports car, but they don't exist. I can only assume the margins/ market isn't there yet.

If I wanted another EV CUV/SUV I'd have tons of options, but that's not what I wanted. Every freaking manufacturer is making those, the market is saturated.

Something to be said for that but I wasn’t wired that way when I was working. Not necessarily right but the way it was.

have a whole different approach to things now.

EA stations are often in the middle of nowhere, there can be a gas station and convenience store and that's it. Last year while traveling to LA there was a scorching heat around 100F. You can't even take dogs for a walk, because of heat and wilderness, only hot asphalt around the chargers. The best thing you can do is sit inside the car with A/C at full power. It takes about an hour more to travel in EV to LA than in an ICE car, and that extra hour you are spending in your car and hope the charger won't stop.

That's actually pretty much what you get from charging 10%-80% on the road and driving at 80mph with A/C at full power. Can be lower in the windy conditions, or if there is a slight elevation, or you have a lot of stuff in the trunk. On one segment of I-5 on a windy day I got only 1.8 mi/kWh. A rule of thumb, you get about 1/2 of EPA range on interstate.

more like 185 max for a 100% for the 1st charge because I leave home at 100% second charge usually is at 140ish, loaded car with 4 passengers, AC or heater running, high speed :D it's a select not a CA-RT1 so miles are already low.

The select is awesome, loving mine after 18 months, also came from a Bolt. In lowest trim the competition all had cloth, lacked features, everyone who gets in my select looks around and assumes it is top trim. Also considered the Y, but too many compromises.
