Since I don't drive a lot, I have had trouble with some of the OTA updates that require the battery to be at ~90%. This works like a charm. Just plug in for like an hour and start the update.

curious why you need to plug in for an hour? Im looking into maybe getting the equipment to updates and just wondered. Does this use a standard 120v plug??

Does that work to maintain the battery during updates? That other one thats recommended is like $500
Has worked perfect so far. I just charge like an hour till it is above 90 and the update installs no problem. I'm doing this with OTA updates, I think the FDRS is different. But this can also charge a fully dead 12v to at least get to where you need to go to get it changed out. This was recommended by @Mach-Lee . I think he knows his stuff.

standard plug, can be set lower if you aren't gonna drive your car often. Like a battery tender.

Yeah was looking for a FDRS one and saw someone else comment you need the other one for those. Thanks

I did, but several people drilled them without removal. I didn’t use any tools for removal. Just pulled straight up around the perimeter.
That's what we did too. Didn't have any problems putting back in either. :)

I have seen the car draw as much as 43A during updates. It usually draws somewhere in the low 30s. That’s a 20A supply, so you’re going to be discharging the battery. For short updates, it would be fine if you leave the car on the supply for a while after the update. For longer updates, you will probably need another to run in parallel. ??

I got these. I did 2.5" holes. Easier to access. I did take some pliers and sorta pushed in part of this so it isn't too hard to get out. As is, they will seal just fine, but sorta hard to remove. But they are perfect if you just push in catch. They match the surface of the mach e too.
I used those too. BUT in the cold, they were very hard to remove becasue the retainer tabs that flex out of the way during insertion/removal was very stiff. I cut those off and they are now easy to remove, but don't come loose, fall out etc.

My only caution - some other threads suggest you can drill the cover in place. That is true only if you have a hole saw with a very shallow pilot drill (or adjustable one) are ready to try to vacuum the mess out of the inside and you are lucky enough not to hit any of the bits underneath.

I took my cover off, and don't regret spending the extra 3 minutes to do so. The risk/reward calculus seemed like an easy decision for me.

Yeah, I took pliers and bent the tabs in. I found out the hard way, I put them in and they were so hard to get out. Now they stay, but are fairly easy to get out with just my fingers. I highly doubt they would fall out on their own.
