Drill the holes so you don't ever have to pull the panels off.

Also, was there a post suggesting this update is related to unlocking tesla charger usage? Or are you just being extremely optimistic?

I am planning on getting the plugs ordered at my shop just have not gotten around to it (or finding my hole saw set in the garage).
I just thought it may be for tesla charging since screen shots of the EA update have been going around and my car was fully up to date as of Saturday. and Telematics makes sense for that software to update since ford/tesla/amazon are all pulling from telematics.
But yeah mostly just hopeful thinking haha.

The TCU is the modem in the car, its what talks back to Ford to send all the telemetry data as well. This is not an update for Tesla charging.

Since the Tesla charger is going to talk CCS protocol to the MachE, I would think most of the updates are going to be happening on the FordPass / Blue Oval Network side in order to unlock this for us. Other than the in-car nav "knowing" about the locations, I would think the only other thing needed is the adapter itself.

There is likely some kind of update for communicating with those stations needed since we're getting plug and charge with them.

From my understanding the car side will work once active with tesla no matter what. Just the plug and charge feature will require a car side update as I'm pretty sure some of that info has to go thru the modem to the network.
I assume you will have to use the tesla app to activate until the OTA hits for plug and charge.

My rudimentary understanding of Plug-and-Charge is the car identifying itself to the charger by sending its VIN, and the the charger performs some kind of lookup to say "Yea, I know how to bill you for this".

Is it more complicated than that?

I believe the standard uses PKI Certificates for security so its not just sending data in plaintext. At the very least they probably have to add in new certs to trust from Tesla.

Good call, didn't think of that. Keeps someone from spoofing a VIN and charging on that account.

I went out and plugged in and FDRS does say to put on the power supply. I update after work and post how it goes
It always says that. But USB updates are done with the car running.

There is a fall-back if the USB doesn't work it will go through OBD, which will take hours and would require the power supply.

Yes a moment of silence to anyone who does obd update with a big file on a 500/Kb per second obd port.
Just did the TCU update, no USB needed. Quick 2-3 min update with no noticeable changes(womp womp), sync build 1058.
maybe the update had a cell network fallback in case at&t goes down again haha

That means it was probably just a config update and not actually updating the software level.
