I just listened to Kyle and Francie's discussion of the Supercharger team massacre. One thing Kyle brought up several times really makes me wonder: why haven't we seen ANY v4 superchargers yet. v3 and below aren't 1000v so they aren't NEVI compliant.

We've seen v4 dispensers but they are still on v3 boxes and limited to 500v. Could this be at the heart of Musk's ire? It will be really interesting when folks figure out they can tell us things without violating NDA, or they blow off the NDA, or they leak.

Musk could be pissed that their chargers have no way to fully take advantage of the charge rate of their newest vehicle (Cyberwedgie).
1000V has been in the requirements since day 1. They’ve had plenty of time to come up with a plan. If they weren’t going to support it, why the heck did they build an 800V truck? Maybe the 1000V equipment took too long or was going to be too expensive for him.

I think he’s just POed because the margins on charging weren’t enough for him, and he doesn’t see Tesla as an innovator in charging anymore so he’s no longer interested in the long haul.

At the end of the day for MME owners, does it even matter? Sure Ford has adopted NACS. It's not like MME cannot use CCS chargers.
Not great news for Tesla owners for the rest of EV owners... business as usual. ?‍♂

One of the few DCFC manufacturers that qualifies for NEVI stations because of its Tennessee plant, Tritium DCFC Ltd., went into receivership in its headquarters country (Australia). That may be a reason. Hawaii has 2 NEVI stations on line with the third quite close to opening. The other 6 or 7 stations are on hold now due to the receivership.
i appreciate your willingness to give ODOT a pass but i assure you the current issue is completely within their cubicle farm. the following was added in feb 2024 (2 years into the NEVI awards) on their own NEVI page:
  • ODOT is developing a new “Design-Build-Operate-Maintain" contract and the requests for proposals (RFP) for the NEVI Year 1 corridors. This project delivery strategy will help accelerate the build out of not only Year 1 corridors but Years 2-5 corridors. However, the development for both the contract creation and RFP development for Year 1 corridors requires additional time. Therefore, the RFP release will be delayed beyond first quarter of 2024.
their contractor/operators may yet have supply chain issues but that would be further down the road and because they are now at the end of the line for equipment orders.

Interesting. Hawaii has a very backwards state government. We had the same requirements and yet the contracts were awarded last summer.

I took a 1600 mile trip earlier this month. Used Tesla Superchargers only. The EA stations along my route are a total mess according to Plugshare. Without Tesla access, I would have rented or borrowed an ICE vehicle.

So, to me at least, this news matters to me.

it matters to MME drivers because charging away from home will get much worse...
Q) Why do you think the entire industry did deals to get on the Tesla network?
A) because if they stayed with the the CCS debacle their business was threatened.
  • The CCS companies are adding chargers at a snails pace... not keeping up with new cars added to the road. much slower than Tesla was. Anyone want to talk about EA reliability? How about the NEVI fiasco?
  • Using the SC network is valuable if the network is maintained, and grows in proportion to new EVs being sold...
    • Who is going to maintain it? they have all been fired.
    • There will be little if any growth... their vendors indicated all pending orders were cancelled.
    • Let's see how the holiday weekend lines are at chargers this year...

I think this will crush EV sales globally....
Why would it do that? He didn't say they are shutting them all down, just that they are slowing growth, etc.

crazy to halt mid install?...yeah... they would never do anything crazy like that. Firing the entire staff after all is not crazy.
Spending $45 billion for a toy (Twitter) also makes zero sense but he is a “genius” so whatever. I’m sure it will all work out…

I thought the deluge of posts every winter about dealers putting the wrong battery in was the entertainment portion? Or is it the off-center speedo now? Or maybe it's the people that really, really, really want autopark in all its terrible glory.
Starts googling "off-center speedo", voice in head: "Don't google off-center speedo"...

I would think laying off the ENTIRE team wouldn’t help with this, but I am just a mere mortal not a god emperor billionaire.

How do you grow let alone do maintenance with zero people? Elon is Lying about slowing growth... If you are slowing growth, you might get rid of X percent of people... not 100%. A few vendors indicated that all their orders were cancelled overnight... you can't grow or maintain operations without parts.

The SC network has to grow proportionally with the number of EV's sold to avoid massive lines during peak demand. There are ~1.5M new EVs sold in the US every year and none of the CCS companies are growing in any meaningful way. Only Tesla SC was.
The people that will buy a car that is perceived to be trapped inside its home bubble of range, have already bought them. News stories of massive lines will dissuade a lot of EV buyers.

Why do you think Farley did the deal with Tesla?

i haven't been able to find any REQUIREMENT for 1000V in the NEVI standards and requirements document. @Mach-Lee do you have a citation or reference to support this?

the charging requirements (federal register published doc) i see are a minimum 150kW DCFC charging to be simultaneously available to each plug - higher levels are obviously permissible but power sharing is only available above 150kW per port. there isn't a 1000V specification, just power.

the v4 posts/dispensers are the only tesla option to comply with the point of sale option to provide a contactless payment option so i would expect those to be in the specs for any tesla NEVI award.
