I just took my 21 MME (52k miles) to the dealer because BlueCruise wasn’t working and to get the recalled software update. They called me and said that BlueCruise was out of date and that it would be about $540 to update. I explained that I purchased the PremiumCare and my BlueCruise subscription isn’t up until Dec of 24. She wasn’t clear if the software updates would be covered and said she’d call me back on Monday. In all my research on the extended warranty I can’t see anywhere if software updates are or are not covered. Anyone know? And if my BlueCruise subscription is valid until the end of 24 should it also be covered and not out of date? TIA

I would be very surprised if any extended warranty will cover software updates. Typically extended warranties will only cover software if it is required to repair a cover failed part. In this case there is no failed part being replaced so therefore no coverage.

BlueCruise should be receiving automatic updates to keep your subscription current and functional. @Ford Motor Company should take interest in this.

So it sounds like you already have the updates that enabled BlueCruise, but the dealer is saying BlueCruise is out of date? I'm not exactly sure what that means. Maybe just that the BlueCruise map data is out of date?

PremiumCare won't cover software updates without a reason, but it should absolutely cover a software update that's required to fix a problem.

Post your VIN here so somebody can check to see if you really have available updates that could be affecting BlueCruise:

We had PremiumCare on our Focus Electric and when we took it in for a steering rack issue I asked them about looking at a rear window that would bounce back when trying to roll up. They said if it was an issue caused by module programming or a bad module, it would be covered, but if it was an issue that was caused by configuration/tuning, it would not be.

I told them not to fix it and thankfully found that you can fix it yourself, so it was a "tuning" type issue and would have cost us.

That said, in your case I feel it would fall under module programming IF you have an issue. You said bluecruise wasn't working and to get the recalled software update, but what update?

I have only heard of two BC issues, the first is for those that didn't have BC active (so maybe early 2021 cars), which is a recall and they should do for free even outside of warranty/regardless of ESP.

The second was the map expiring, which was an error on Ford's part, and also I believe a recall but should have been fixed OTA.

Maybe you can tell us what about BC isn't working? It just being out of date, in terms of module software, shouldn't matter if one of the two issues above isn't the cause.

Ok so apparently I am going to have to do the updates myself. I purchased a Vgate vLinker FS OBD2 USB Adapter for for-Scan HS/MS-CAN Auto Switch to be able to use on Forscan. But looks like I need to use FJDS for my 2021 MME?? I only say FJDS because when I click on FDRS it says a MME isn't covered under that??

So do y'all agree with this? And either way am I able to use that adapter? If not do you recommend a low priced version, since I am probably only going to use it this once.

And then the next question once I do get whatever up will I be able to do all of these updates if I purchase a 2 day license?

Just wanting to be safe on it and since the dealership is giving me all sorts of grief and wanting to charge me $540 to do it I just want to do it and get it over with.

That’s pretty insane, is BC programming still not active @Mach-Lee ?

I’d say if you didn’t get it OTA like was supposed to happen for everyone, it should be covered under warranty.

Hi all, I'm hoping for some clarification on my ESP premium care. I am at 38,000+ miles and yesterday my car would not charge faster than 11kw on a fast charger and stranded us 125 miles from home. It was getting late and the car was not making much progress so I dropped it off using the afterhours drop box at Diamond Ford in Lancaster, CA and was fortunate a family member was willing to drive us home otherwise we would have needed to pay $175 for a Lyft.

The service tech called this morning and said the slow charging was due to a "critical software update" and he said that fixed the problem (although he did not test it at a fast charger or take it for a test drive) and software issues are not covered under my ESP and I need to pay $225 for the diagnostic and SW update. When I inquired about purchasing the ESP from FLood Ford I made sure to ask if EV software issues were covered and told yes. I read the brochure and I don't see anything excluding software updates and this issue prevented me from driving my car and caused a lot of frustration and inconvience. On the way to the service departent, I received the Powertrain Malfunction/reduced power and was not able to accelerate very well and high Voltage Battery warning so this was more than a SW update. I am hoping to pick it up tomorrow and want to have clear information that this issue is indeed a covered ESP situation.

I do not know of any extended warranty that covers software updates as coverage usually requires a failed part that needs to be replaced for coverage to apply.

You can always call Ford ESP claims with your VIN and they can tell you if the update would be covered under you policy. I believe their phone number is 800-392-3673.

The reason it needed the "critical software update" was because it would not charge so I think that is a valid reason for needing the update. It also threw the Low power and high voltage battery error messages. I was not able to reach Ford on the phone but sent them an IM and hope to get clarifiction before I drive 125 miles each way to pick it up. This has been an overall frustrating experience and not a good end to our Father's day family celebration.

The high voltage system, including charging, should be covered for 100k miles. You do not need the ESP for that.

The problem is the 8/100 coverage you speak of related to actual parts in the high voltage system. In this case, no parts are required for the repair, just a software update. Since there is no part being replaced, there would be no coverage under the 8/100 high voltage coverage. Unfortunately almost all extended warranties operate the same way. If there is no failed part being replaced there is no coverage under the policy.

I'm curious if indeed software updates are not covered by the extended warranty. Why doesn't ford offer an annual subscription for software updates once the original warranty expires. With what I've read that dealers are charging for these updates it'd be cheap.

BTW, here is the ESP ford plan for EVs. No mention of software which seems to be a huge hole in protection

I have been searching everywhere for clarification and have not heard back from Ford yet.
