Just yesterday there was a news story (kinda late since I read about it about a month ago ) where insurance companies are using drones/planes/satellites to "inspect" policy holders houses and then dropping them if they see things the don't like .
Yeah we do NEED to stand up to this kinda crap. Im old enough to remember insurance companies setting rates partially on what magazines you read . How's THAT tell you if Im a good driver or not ?
Congress just passed a bill forbidding foreign companies from collect data on US citizens . My question was why only foreign companies ?
So you don't feel an insurance company should be able to see if an insured property has an issue in considering coverage? I don't like the "we're dropping you", but fully support "if you don't get a new roof in the next 120 days, we're dropping you".

If you didn't know already, you have an insurance "score". Based on credit, claims, etc. It impacts whether they'll give you a policy, and also rates. Mine just dropped because they paid out a $32,000 hail damage roof claim. Rate went up, it will take more than my lifetime for it to go up and use that $32,000 they paid out.

I think the issues are:
(1) Transparency
(2) distinguishing objective data (like whether your pool has the fence required by law) vs. subjective inferred data (like because you belong to a certain political party, you are more likely a dangerous driver)

#2 is the issue.

#2, inferred data, has been used by companies for decades to market to people, and make decisions. If you live in a neighborhood where the average house is $500,000, and everyone has 2 cars, then the data leads them to that same conclusion for you. They corroborate this with actual data they have, as well as buying data on you from other sources.

My career was in marketing (retired now). I bought data in the 80s from companies that bought data and then did data overlays on lists you gave them. State driver license departments have been selling your data for 50+ years.

I’m glad I am canine. Most companies don’t care to market to me. Specism. ?‍♂?

no disagreement on your comments. I agree. Just like the supermarket can infer what might be going on in your life based on certain products you buy (in exchange for discounts you get when using your shopping club. It’s actually an important point that use of data is not a new thing.

The question for me in terms of driving my car, is how deep and personal they can get. Knowing exactly how I press the accelerator on a particular street, or what my eyes are looking at in the car, or my heart rate, or what music I listen to on the weekend, is far more personal than what neighborhood I live in and basic name/address/public driving record info.

yes we already agree to give certain data to our phone company - like Apple, but they are already subject to scrutiny. I think CarPlay and android auto are important because it limits the need to hand over data to the automaker on top of that, and I am sure the automaker does not have even close the the process/protections/scrutiny as an Apple or Google.

Give them an inch, they take a mile. It happens slowly until all freedoms are gone.

HINT.....the glove didn't fit ?
Gawdammit you ruined it for me

I'm not worried about the MME. I already know they don't use any collected data from the car or they'd know BC 1.4 isn't out there, or they'd know it kicks off all the freakin time. They might even know that we like OUR presets on the radio and our backseat reminders to stay off. The most I see the MME being able to harvest is how often I go to Costco and my kids school.

I’m more concerned about the insurance company phone apps. Sure, they claim they’re all about making it easy to view your policy, insurance card, and make payments. I have a sneaking suspicion that they’re collecting location and velocity information that can be used (and not to your benefit).

You can at least disable if an app gets location data or not from your OS side.

On the other hand a large number of people literally feed them OBDII data for a lower premium.

Well obviously the safe is overkill.
