In many cities its a city ordinance that you can't park in an EV spot unless you're charging. Thus it is a ticketable offense. Just call the meter enforcement officer over.

Note that this also applies to an EV parked there and not charging.

Yup. At one post someone sold plastic hangtags to put on the charging cable. If your EV was still there but had stopped charging, you could direct people to text you so you could unlock the vehicle remotely to release the cable and then come move your car if possible.

I've printed some of these ready to use when I get my car. Have been tempted to use them now but resisted.
Just hope you use them fairly, including when an EV blocks a charger too. Not that that's probably happening much yet since there's so few on the road, but it's coming.

Us getting mad may just make them feel better? @dbsb3233 and @DaveRuns may have it right but how does that help. Pull up behind them and fall asleep, go for a walk ;). Try to find where they are and put them over the PA; license number etc. ........ think they will stand up ?? Most of ours are at the back of restaurant's, box stores or office complexes parking lots right now. Not what I would call preferred parking. We will see as this is all new to us.

Well if it is a Level-2 charger and not a DCFC: Just park behind them, grab your J1772 extension cord and start charging anyway. ;)

I've seen some charge stations that "motivate" owners to unplug and move the car... once charging is complete, they offer a grace period (e.g. 10 minutes) after which they start charging a per-minute fee for having a non-charging car still plugged in at the EV charger.

Interesting idea, but probably self-defeating. The type of people that would selfishly block a spot aren't likely the type that would leave their number. And the responsible ones are likely checking their phone app for charge status.

I do hope the apps have audible alarms in them too.

The plastic hangtags were for considerate EV drivers, not for jerk ICE drivers LOL (kind of a "if you need to charge go ahead and unplug me"--I've seen some of those signs on cars at Level-2 chargers).

Yeah I have never got one and the whole "we're a community" thing probably fizzled out. I will say I've only charged away from home maybe 10 times in 6 years. But of those 10 instances the first charger I went to was either ICE'd or not working probably 5-6 of those times

And make sure you've paid your insurance premium. That's what I'd worry about, someone retaliating. Or trying to force their way out. Could be tough trying to bumper-nudge a heavier BEV out of the way though.

I get that. But hopefully the apps are better now at warning people when the car is almost charged.

When EVs were super rare, a jury-rigged method like that is ok to get by temporarily. But as they go mainstream something much better is needed.

It is going to take me a real long time to make fuel costs less in an EV at this rate ;).

That and public chargers are more and more online allowing the app to let people know if the charger is occupied.

Yup not saying its a practical solution...

Let them electrocute themselves.

I've rarely been at a supercharger with more than 1 car already there though. I always managed to avoid the crowded line spots as my road trips were usually off peak season. Plus it's not quite that simple to "just unplug it." Then again, I didn't supercharge that often .

In the long run, when EV's are more mainstream, they will either need way more charging stations, or a more elegant solution to the problem of someone just hogging a station just to park. I hope for more and more stations. Anyone remember 70's gas lines? ugg
