In the past I tuned my car, beside a bigger turbo, downpipe and bigger aluminium intercollegiate etcetera we spend lots of time changing the software. As the Mach -e is almost all software, how contour guys see the future of tuning the Mach-e? Or is Ford “big brother you” via the OTA-channel?

The latter. I wouldn't feel comfortable hacking my $55k vehicle to try and get it to do something the manufacturer didn't provide.

Not even sure it's necessary either. They give us a number of configurable options that we can set ourselves.

That doesn't mean that some people won't try to do their own hacks. But I don't expect to be one of them.

I think once EVs become more mainstream you're going to see homebrew/jailbreaked versions of the respective car's OSes. It's just a matter of time.

You might even see a piggybacked tuning system or flashed like a COBB system, or Hondata, or something like that.

Granted Ford or Tesla or whoever will try to brick, or lockout cars or say that its unsafe, but I think it will happen.

I'm willing to bet if the Mach-E is popular and successful, we'll see Ford offer some "Ford Performance" Tune/Flash/Software upgrade for enthusiasts that wouldn't void the basic 3/35k warranty and some type of track package(s) offered down the road.

I'm kinda hoping they might offer tuning packages. They specially tuned the EU cars for summer and winter tires vs the all seasons in the US, I'd like to have that tune because I'm getting the RWD and a winter / summer combo setup over time (I love controlled tailhappy driving on winter tires)

And the great part of the Mach-E is that the tune software can be delivered via OTA update. No more bringing your car to a tuner in to be plugged into a software loader or sending your ECU in to get bench flashed.

Definitely. If Ford is moving to all EV like everyone else, they will need Ford Performance to get heavily involved in EVs. I just hope Team Edison is already working closely with them to push the limits of performance starting with Mach-E.

That is what I thought (sorry for the autocorrect :) )

The only thing I have a “hmmm” about is the big brother data over the ota.
What can ford see?

Say ford offers tuning for insane $$, and a simalar package is available from other sources for way less, will they brick MY car.?

And let’s say that I maybe like to drive fast where it’s safe but not allowed? (yes that’s a moral decision, but mine to make not ford, Apple, insurance...)
Does Ford record this?
And will they down tune older cars like I hear tesla does?
It’s no bodies business but mine, where I have been? Or not?
Is it possible for the owner of the car to controle the ota processes? Who owns our data? You, me or Ford??
Can they sell/unlock it to insurance, goverment?
Or am I just overly worried?

I don't know about OTA. But Ford has always said that Ford is the steward of the data and the customer owns their data (transmitted to Ford via the vehicle modem or associated applications on your phone).

I can appreciate, understand, agree, and relate to all of this.

That said, how many of us have asked these same questions of our mobile phone vendor of choice? Think about it, at least your car is only barely used. But, most Americans (at least) carry around little data recorders EVERYWHERE and have them on us AT ALL TIMES. We surf the internet on them (do we all surf only G rated sites? Do we only surf pro-government sites?). We use them for our wallets.

I think if one is comfortable with carrying around a mobile device which we've read in news stories clearly records your every move and transaction, you should be less worried about a car that does the same. Now, if you don't own a smartphone, then yeah be afraid be very afraid :()

I am not saying your car would be bricked, but I could easily see that voiding any remaining warranty you have. Since everything is controlled electronically, you may not have anyway to prove that any future errors weren’t the result of a bad 3rd party update.

Agree, not under warranty. But what after your warranty is passed? Say in 3 years when third parties have manufactured stuff for our Mach-e?

I wonder if it could impact your 8 year battery warranty too though since the battery could potentially be updated by OTA updates
