I’ve got the Select LFP. Really happy with it
overall.

my Dad wants to sell his 2017 Escape and get a MachE as well.

the Long Range NMC battery is about 4000$ CAD more.

Factoring in my dad doesn’t really need the extra range but the additional cost isn’t an issue either.

Given the choice, which battery would you choose based on the technology and long term reliability. The most important aspect is he’ll keep this car for the next 10 or more years.

I would recommend the LFP because is has a slower rate of degradation compared to NCM. If he doesn't need the extra range or power then it's sort of a waste.

LFP is more sensitive to cold however, so he will need to keep it plugged in to Level 2 every night in the winter.

I wish my Premium had the LFP because I charge to 100% every time on DCFC or L2.

Will see how NMC performs after my charge habits....

This was my thinking too, it will be parked in a heated garage at all times and the 2025’s have the heat pump that will help a bit.

it’s hard for him to accept that something “less expensive” is “better”.

for him, I’m thinking the long term reliability is the smarter move.

We have a 2024 with LFP. We love that we can charge it to 100% without worrying (too much) about degrading the battery, so we actually get to use the full available capacity. A friend of mine (with an ID.4, almost same battery size) effectively gets 20% less than he bargained for). We noticed some drop in range during the winter, but had no problems with that, as we seldom go more than 3 hours without a break. (Granted, when we start, we have the car in the garage and trigger preconditioning before leaving, and it rarely gets below -10 C here nowadays). I would take the LFP if I were you/him.

Other than the increased weight, I'd strongly prefer the LFP chemistry to the NCM that my standard range vehicle has. I like the benefits of charging to 100% and significantly less concerns relating to heat induced degradation.

Since I own a GT, NMC. Were I looking for a model that could make use of the LFP, I would choose that. Since the LFP won’t support a GT, that’s moot. 🤔🐩

LFP can and should be charged to 100%.

NMC they say not to often, but since there's a SOC buffer built in and never can reach true 100%, my "100%" charges is actually less than that.

I believe in ABC (always be charging) and ACT100% (always charge to 100%).

I understand that. I don’t understand why someone with a NMC battery would charge it to 100% and lament not having a LFP battery with less range and worse cold weather performance.

Not exactly. LFP has less degradation at 100% vs NMC, but it’s still not great to charge it to 100% and keep it there.

It doesn’t *like* to be at 100%, but it’s a necessity to give the BMS a more accurate readout of SoC due to its shallow voltage curve.

Living in warm sunny So Calif year around, I don't experience cold weather at all.

I was on the cusp of Ford switching over from NMC to LFP when mine was built.

Really wanted the LFP on my standard range Mach E.

But after reading battery degradation over time which is not much even for 100% charges, I figure I'd trade or sell the car long before it reached that level.

Driving in winter each year, I would not want to use electricity to keep my LFP battery warm. Skiing this past winter with the Lightning, the battery temp unplugged was 16 degrees at one point. This would result in a big power hit, and very slow charging. No thanks.

IMO

LFP - Naturally aspirated engines
NMC - Turbo-charged engines
High cobalt NMC or 800-1000V cells - Supercharged engines.
