2021 Ford Mach-E Select
Hello all!

I have a 2021 Mach-E AWD select, and have had it since February this year. I have been having intermittent recurring problems related to the charging of this car. I first had problems with this car giving me powertrain malfunction and high-voltage battery warnings, and when I took it into the dealer, they told me to stop charging at the charge point chargers at work (my only easy option at the time, but I’ve since installed my own charger at home). They also said if I charge at L3 chargers, I might have the same issue. But - when I’d get these errors, it was never during charging or even the day of charging, so I found it unlikely that it was the brand of charger, but I went along with it anyway. Issues still kept happening, even when discontinuing ChargePoint chargers. Eventually, I found a pattern where I’d drive the car in the morning, park it in an open parking lot during the heat of the day, and when I’d come back to it and turned it on - the same errors. So, I took it back to the dealer and they narrowed it down to some battery components/modules, but they need an active error to be able to diagnose and order the correct modules. They were never able to, so they gave the car back and said they’d work on getting some software to diagnose the parts without needing errors present. Until then, they said the car is still safe to drive. Fast forward to now - I’m at an L3 charger on a road trip, my only charging option, and now I have all of these errors again and have a charge rate of 10kW.

I feel like it might be the HVJB issue that other models have, but I don’t know how to confirm this. I don’t know if the dealership checked but I assumed they did because of the recalls for other years/trims (I realize I shouldn’t have assumed that now). I also don’t want to be limited to only some L2 chargers and L1 chargers as I thought this car was supposed to support all levels of charging - I bought it thinking that, but maybe I’m mistaken. Any help/advice is appreciated, thanks!

First, I’m really sorry to hear about the issues you’re experiencing. It’s incredibly frustrating when a car that’s supposed to make life easier becomes a source of stress, especially on road trips when you rely on fast charging.

From what you’ve described, it sounds like the problem might indeed be related to the high-voltage junction box (HVJB), especially since your symptoms align with some reported issues from earlier models and trims. If your dealership hasn’t explicitly ruled out the HVJB issue or verified that your car isn’t affected by the recall, I’d recommend asking them to confirm. Even if your car isn’t in the recall range, similar symptoms could point to a related issue.

It’s also surprising that the dealership suggested avoiding ChargePoint or L3 chargers without clear evidence that those were causing the problem. These vehicles are designed to handle L3 charging reliably, and like you, I’ve used ChargePoint L3 chargers without any issues. (Used one two weeks ago)

If your dealer mentioned needing active errors to diagnose the issue but then returned the car to you, it might be worth pushing for them to escalate this to Ford’s corporate technical team. Ford dealers have access to tools like the FDRS (Ford Diagnostic and Repair System), which should allow them to dig deeper without relying solely on active errors. If they don’t seem confident, it might be worth exploring another Ford EV-certified dealership that has more experience troubleshooting Mach-Es.

If the car is still under warranty, and this impacts the drivability or intended functionality (like reliable L3 charging), you could consider opening a case with Ford’s customer service team directly to ensure the dealership stays proactive in resolving this.

I hope this gets sorted out quickly for you! These cars are incredible when they work as intended, and it sounds like you’ve done everything right in trying to address this.

This is timely. I have a 2021 Premium standard range. I don't fast charge very often, but we did a couple of times this weekend. Last night after we arrived home, it threw several errors, including a high voltage battery warning, but the errors seem to be phantoms. It did this once during the summer as well, but then calmed down. I don't recall if that was following a fast charge session, but it could have been.

May or may not be related to what is happening to you.

Thank you for such a quick response! It’s thankfully still under warranty for the next few years, I’ll definitely push to either confirm the HVJB or get them to check it out. It sounded like they did contact corporate for the development of the new software, but I’ll see if I can get a case number and add that to my own escalation. And unfortunately, the first ford dealership I spoke with was the one that told me to avoid those chargers the first time, so I went to a second ford dealership who told me about the possible battery module errors. They seemed more capable, and just needed those errors present. I’ll keep in mind maybe going to a third dealership though.

Again, thank you!

Hi there. This HVJB concern doesn’t sound like something we want you to experience with your Mach-E. Should you need further assistance, please send us a DM with your VIN and the name and location of your Ford dealer and I'd be happy to look into how I can assist you on my end.
