Anyone know how it works? It doesn't seem to match the car's GOM (the car has it in miles rather than % but they don't seem to be predicting the same outcome)

They might be working independently, in which case the gom (intelligent range) would be estimating based on past driving and current conditions, while AA/Google maps estimates based on an actual destination. You could try cancelling the route in AA and see if the gom number changes to confirm.

Observations in my experience, Android GOM is independent of built in nav (it will commonly show a different arrival % estimate) and also is pretty accurate. I saw during a 1000 mile trip I made during sub-zero weather in early January 2025. The Android Auto predicted arrival percentages were right on the money +/- 1%.

Here's a good video on this topic:

i just got it so only a few datapoints, but it has been very inaccurate for me (mostly too conservative but there's some bias in that result too).

it'll say arrive with 10%, over the course of the drive slowly tick up, i ended up landing with just over 20%.

(bias obviously in that since it told me 10% i wasn't sure which direction it could be wrong, so i drove slower and didn't use heat, but again, that's why i'm asking how it calculates it)

The car only tells your phone the current SoC. It's not sending the info on the Guess-o-meter so Google maps uses its own calculations to determine what you'll arrive with just based on your charge level and how it thinks you drive.

You wouldn't want it to stick with it beginning guess. at the beginning it is making assumptions about how you will drive and what the conditions are. It can recalculate and be more accurate as you have less miles remaining to your destination.

this is exactly my question though. how it thinks i'll drive based on what inputs?

GOM guesses based on recent drive history. what does google base it off of, as it doesn't seem to be the same as GOM.

only by knowing this will i be able to make a judgement on which direction/magnitude the Android guess is going to be wrong

Google maps has always used your driving history to predict arrival times. I think we all know Google is recording that data all the time and that's one do the many things it's used for.
