We might be considering a demo/FCTP car and have a few questions for anyone with insight or experience (@DealerInsider for example)

-First, who actually owns these demo cars: Ford or the dealer?
-Who gets the $7500 tax credit? Ford? The Dealer? The soon-to-be-owner?
-Should we really expect any discount/mileage adjustment given the current state of inventory and 6+ month order timeline? I
-Does this affect financing? Options versus Credit?

Thanks in advance!

The dealer owns them...

Ford is letting us use the $7500 tax credit as a rebate...

You should be able to get a discount depending on the spec (ie discount on standard battery)...

Doesn’t effect financing...

Let me know how I may help

Thanks so much for the quick reply; much appreciated. So, essentially, Ford/dealer took the tax credit for themselves and then offer it to the buyer as a rebate; makes sense.

So, one dealer stated that they would give us $7500 off the MSRP; another said “that rebate would be between you & your accountant”. I’m confused; are both correct?

They may both be correct.

One made an offer of reducing your sale price for you.

The other didn't want to explicitly acknowledge that your accountant would just shrug and that dealer doesn't want to lower its price by that much.

So... It's up to you to decide which dealer is providing the best overall package for you. :)

$7,500 Retail Bonus Cash Tax Credit Incentive - it’s only eligible on out of service FCTP mannequin units...go with the dealer that said they would give it to you

Program rules:

Yes see, it's also possible that it could be a rebate or the customer could have to file for it on their own, it depends on the dealer location.

In areas where the dealer has to title the unit while in FCTP service then Ford has setup the program so that the tax credit is like a rebate once the unit is out of service, because the dealer is then considered the first owner so that's the only way to pass on the credit to the second owner (you). In most states where the vehicle is not titled for FCTP then the vehicle is still 'new', the person buying the car is the first owner and files for the tax credit like normal.

I know they are starting to sell the FCTP cars now. My dealer's FCTP is about to be picked up by its new owner.

That’s the thing: same state, same county, different dealers.

I was already across the street today and stopped in to my dealer. They have an FCTP with 2,500 miles that came in weeks after mine. They are debating whether they will sell it or keep it as a demo. Incoming inventory is really unpredictable and they're seeing a lot of interest in the car. Having nothing to show actually hurts them. It's the only one they have on the lot at the moment.

I bought a demo this week and it wasn't titled. It was sold as a new car. I paid for a Carfax report to ensure that they were telling the truth. The dealer was confused and worried I would miss out on the rebate. I tried to get the rebate and was going to claim the tax credit too…but they finally caught on that I’d be eligible for the tax credit. Thankfully I had read about the program on some other threads so I knew what to expect. Was worth a try though!

We haven’t totally ruled out buying a demo but now only 3 weeks away from build date. My Wife has been car less for a month now so the thought of having one by next week is very appealing to her!

They can keep it for 6,000 miles or 180 days, whichever comes first. Then it goes up for sale.

Yea I saw one dealership selling their demo car for only 2k under MSRP. That gives me hope for my own car's resale value.. if I decide to trade it in on a Lightning or GT. Things I haven't been able to decide....
