so I let my 'Connected Services' lapse. I refuse to pay for maps I can get for free on my phone.... are you listening @Ford Motor Company ?

Turns out that the 'Native' Navigation Maps do not update if you do this.... which is pissing me off. I don't want or need interactive mapping layers that require live connected services for traffic conditions or locations of BlueOval chargers, etc. I just want and expect up to date roadmaps, which I can get for free on the phone to be displayed in the native Nav map on the big screen that I paid for.

I would expect the BASE layer of roads to be 'free', and live conditions, etc maybe to be a subscription cost for added info.

so..... any way to force an update of just road maps for navigation for free WITHOUT paid subscription?

Can you clarify? Which service did you not renew? Connected Built in Navigation? Or Ford Premium Connectivity?

I have already let the Ford Premium Connectivity run out on mine and have not noticed either way if I am getting map updates. I learned in this forum long ago that premium connectivity doesn't effect OTA updates (powerups). I plan to pay the $80 a year for connected built in Navigation when my trial runs out. I have expected that map updates would be covered in that package. Can anyone confirm that?

Also, a comment, These built in maps are ALWAYS way behind on every car I have ever owned. And updates are only free for a while. After that they cost (a lot as I recall) Same thing with GPS standalone devices. Some have lifetime maps, others don't, so you have to read the fine print! So, are you sure you aren't getting updates at all? Or are they just lagging?

I think is unrealistic to expect free map updates. It is intellectual property and Ford doesn't own it. I don't know details of this but I have had occasion to try to use map data to pin my customer locations for example. Its one thing to get a high view map for free (think google earth), but another to get an updated map that allows one to overlay a pin (charger locations, eateries, etc). And who's paying the programming staff to integrate that custom data into the map system? Who’s paying to maintain the data centers where all this data resides? Nothing in life is free, my friends. Everything has a cost.

I will not renew any Connectivity if there is a fee, I will just use my phone.

I consider the base navigation data update to be a trade for MY location and vehicle data which @Ford Motor Company is taking for free using, and re-selling.

I can understand charging extra for optional data layers and updates for charger locations, live road conditions, radar trap notifications, etc. that is fee for service.

I totally understand charging for custom data layering

Who’s paying to maintain the data centers where all this data resides?
we all pay google by watching embedded ads in other google products for them to maintain base layer geomapping.

Maybe you want Ford to add ads to the electronics ie. pop up ads in the middle of Bluecruise or navigation to pay for this???

and the updates are coming from Garmin, yeah I don't really expect to get free map upgrades. I've never owned a car that had built in nav where upgrades were free. My first nav system, you had to buy the cds to upload into the car.

Before that, they used a hard disk installed in the car. They charged a lot to install an updated one, after the warranty period ended. Never really needed an update, though, in most parts of the world.

I agree though and thought I saw a map update not that long ago for BC. One would think if we have a BC sub the maps should be included as it’s kinda the basis for the system to know what roads are BC’d.
Now, how often the maps actually are updated is another can o worms. Let alone the mess that is OTA’s in order to get it.

I don't give a crap about bluecruise, but I would hope that is a high subscription cost for the most up to date mapping available.

I just want street updates for free.... like on my phone. Or, a free and easy way to cast my phone screen to the big screen.

You do realize that most “free” high quality maps ARE monetized? Just because you’re not writing check to Google doesn’t mean you aren’t “paying” for the service in some way.
I remember with my Jaguar, id have to buy new CDs at over $100 every time the maps were updated (which was semi-annually). The modern way of doing it with near-real time map updates, and lower costs, is much better.
As Larry Niven said, TANSTAAFL.

There is no evidence that Ford is selling Personally Identifiable Information (PII). In fact, in some of the videos leading up to the launch of the Mustang Mach-E, they made a big deal of how Bill Ford was concerned about owner data privacy.
