The windshield wipers on our 2021 MME Premium randomly turn on once for a single pass. This most frequently happens at start up, or a few minutes after start up. There is no moisture on the window, and the car is garaged so there's no possible way that moisture can be triggering this when the car is started in a dark garage. It usually does not occur more than once during a driving session. I've cleaned the hell out of the windshield thinking that dirt might be confusing the sensor, but that did not help.

It's a minor annoyance, but the concern is that the wipers will scratch the dry windshield. Anyone experience this problem?

No, it's not the courtesy wipe, and yes, many including myself have experienced this. I think it thinks there is moisture, then realizes there is not, that's why it's only 1 wipe.

Courtesy wipe is after you use the windshield washer, it does another wipe like 5 seconds after it's done to catch the drips.

My GT-PE sometimes will do a single wipe at power-up, most of the time not. Most of the time there is some sort of moisture on the windscreen, occasionally not. It doesn’t really bother me, but maybe I am weird. ?‍♂?

My GT PE just did this today since it was raining yesterday and I left my wipers on auto. I keep them off unless its raining and then just put them a notch up and let auto handle the work.

It’s a great feature, it clears your windshield of dust so you can be sure to have a perfect view.

Yes, this is a joke. Yes it happens randomly to lots of people (everyone?).

Thanks all for the replies. Based on your feedback so far, here's what I found.
  • Courtesy wipe was off
  • Rain detect was on
  • Turning rain detect off caused the wipers to run continuously (in a dark, dry garage.)
  • Moved the control stalk down one position (to position 1 defined below) with detect off. Wipers stopped.
So maybe I was not understanding the controls.

Is this correct?:
Position 0: Lowest position momentary - returns to position 1 when released
Position 1: Off/(and Auto ?)
Position 2: Timed Intermittent
Position 3: Lo speed
Position 4: High speed

What's confusing me is in which positions the Auto detect is active as the Auto setting affected Position 2's behavior in an unexpected way.

Position 2: Timed Intermittent/auto (time adjustments adjust sensitivity when auto is on)
Position 3: Lo speed
Position 4: High speed

^^^ Correct. Position 2, i.e. 1 click up from off, is when the rain detection works, assuming you have it on. And, the variable control adjusts sensitivity. When you turn off rain detect, the variable control adjusts speed.

@Motomax and @RickMachE : Thanks for clearing this up for me. Sensitivity was set to max which I assume was the reason for the spurious wipes with auto detect on.

It’s funny, the bug generally only occurs for me when the car is parked outdoors during the daytime, so I assumed it was heat or sunlight on the sensor that was causing it. But others report it happening in their garage. But it’s a known bug, and it isn’t exclusive to the Mach E (or even Ford, I think).

I’ve included this among a long list of bugs here…. https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/mach-e-issues-compilation-list-wiki.3430/post-350449

I’ve had this happen on almost every vehicle I’ve ever owned with auto wipers. I’ve gotten used to turning them off when not using. So simple, just reach over and push the lever down.
