Before First Tire Rotation

My MME is coming up on 7500 miles and I plan to have the tires rotated soon. From various posts on these forums I have learned that there are very precise locations for the shop (in my case Discount Tire) to put the jack. I see that AOSK makes jacking pucks to put on the car before jacking it. I am leasing my car, so don't want to spend any unnecessary money, but is it worth considering buying a set? Are these intended for permanent installation? Or should they be removed after the tires are rotated?

Or now that the MME has been around for several years, is this no longer necessary? Do shops know enough to avoid jacking in the wrong place?

The jack pads are required in my opinion. I also lease and figure $20 is much cheaper than paying out frame or potential battery damage. You can probably find them even cheaper if you look around, there are a lot of vendors supplying them now.

I wouldn't trust a shop to know where to jack up your car, it's too easy to assume you can use the pinch welds like every other car on the planet.

I think it depends on the location. The Discount Tire by me handles EVs regularly. I’ve used them for several tire rotations without any issues.

They use a whole car jack not the individual floor jacks so the pucks don’t need to be used.

Kind of like this but longer so it extends to the whole side of the body.

I have the temporary ASOK pucks too. I use them if I want to lift just one or two wheels at a time at home.

My DT uses floor jacks. They have pucks. I have to always mention them using the pucks. I also have to watch the workers and stop them when they try not to use the pucks. I also have to ensure they are jacking on the puck, and not the battery rail. I've been disappointed in the several visits that they seem to continually require supervision on this issue.

Sometimes lease include the regular maintenance, companies due this to insure that the car is being serviced right. If it's not it's not.

I bought the AOSK pucks and as was mentioned, 20 bucks is a pretty good premium for an insurance policy that may save you thousands down the road. The pucks come w/these nifty stickers you can put on each side of the battery frame rail. I took it one step further and got these jack point stickers to make as abundantly clear as possible where the jack point access holes are.

My local small town Discount Tire smiled when I mentioned the puck/jack-point on my GTPE and responded that they were well aware of the Mach-E lifting requirements.

I then watched through the window as the person responsible to jack the car up did indeed use pucks properly.

They did a great job, but I will STILL remind them next time and everytime I bring them the Mach-E.

Not in my Red Carpet Lease. But I don’t know that I would trust my local Ford dealer as much as my local Discount Tire dealer.

My mechanic said not to bother rotating tires. I have a premium RWD. He says the wear from the torque on the rear tires offsets the wear in front from steering. He has a Tesla with RWD and does not rotate his tires. I only have 20k miles but they seem to be wearing evenly.

I did buy the pucks, but my guys already had them and uses them. I keep them in the car just in case.

They had the pucks.
I was disappointed not to have the opportunity to use my brand new fancy set.

That’s really weird. On regular RWD without the crazy torque it’s still the rears that wear. Add on 400-650 lbft of torque and the rears will wear at a much higher rate.

But honestly what do I know my tires were shot after 12k anyway.

The mechanic obviously knows very little about suspension dynamics. I put more torque through my rear tires in the T/A than my MME can dream of making through all 4. It also will run rings around most exotics and supercars on the skid pad. Frequent Tire rotation is absolutely necessary on that car. ??
