Happened to me for the first time yesterday leaving from work. I thought it moght be overheating of the center screen, but I had been using a sunshade, so when I felt it, and it was not hot.
I used a sunshade on my windshield but it was pointless when temperature is above 90+F in Texas. The sun light also came from passenger window and the roof. I had to use a custom made bubble reflective sunshade on the side window and it made the car looked hilarious.

I found this one on Temu to cover the screen and it helps when it is not too hot outside. I only used it once. It is $1.50 and partially fixes a $60k car issue. This is ridiculous.

I took a trip to Texas when I first got the car. It sat in the sun with 100+ degree temps (display showed 116) and never had a problem. I don’t think temperatures are the problem unless something’s changed in the newer model years.

Mine started freezing shortly after startup fairly regularly (every other day or so). The most annoying part is that in that case my backup-camera doesn't display, which means I have to reset SYNC before I back-out of my garage.

Tesla had an issue like this with their earlier cars. They were using screens that were not Automotive grade. I think their initial solution was to hand out "free" screen covers. Essentially towels. That didn't sit too well with their customers. I'm not sure if they eventually replaced all the screens.

Hi Jack. Can you send us a DM with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into this for you.

Just want to update here about my attempts to get this resolved
.
@Ford Motor Company opened a case for me. I took it to the dealer last Friday. Dealer did a full system rese, but they were still able to reproduce the freezing (thank God for them being able to reproduce the issue). They let me have the car back while they contacted Ford Engineering. Today I dropped it off again. Ford Engineering is having them try some SW tricks...backing out / re-applying updates. I honestly don't have much confidence in that working, but my hope is that at least it keeps reproducing for them, so they don't send me home with a "fixed" car.

My completely unqualified/unjastified diagnosis based on doing IT work for friends and family over the last few decades:
- Whatever computer is running the center screen is defective. It could be a loose solder joint on one of the chips causing some kind of corruption during bootup, or a bad chip overall.
- Undervoltage from the LVB
- Loose/defective connector on some module. The whole system is a network (actually several) of modules talking to each other. Just like a bad LAN cable can cause home internet issues, I can imagine one loose connection being responsible for something like this. Unfortunately there are so many possible failure points in this vehicle. I actually had this happen in my Mazda where a loose connector on the passenger seat would trigger the airbag warning light to come on.

Mine did it once about a week ago when leaving the house in the morning. I drove a couple of blocs with the black screen before pulling over and turning the car on and off again. That time the screen worked and, so far, it hasn't reoccurred.

I expect no real resolution to be honest either. If anything having it in for 3 visits does give me a lemon option if I get to irritated with it. Latest new issue is my first call doesn't seem to allow me to hear the person I call, have to hang up and recall and all is well...

That happens to me. My solution is to change the audio to "phone speaker" then "Bluetooth" during that first call and the audio ends up working afterwards

Hey John! Can you please send us a DM with your VIN and dealer name/location so I can look into this phone call audio concern for you? I'd be happy to see what I can do to assist!

Well, the "fix" that was done on my car (bill says "FDRS reset") didn't resolve the issue. The dealer could not reproduce, but as soon as I got home it happened again :surpised_pikachu_face:

My dealer diagnosed bad APIM. Part ordered.
Lucky for you. I hope it solves your issue. Do you know how they diagnosed it? Did it reproduce for them? I'm trying to understand how to guide my dealer to do more than just "reset the system".

I do not know exactly how it was diagnosed. But they did tell me that they’ve seen a rash of APIM failures lately across different models.
