I've been wanting to get the Mustang Mach E for some time. Unfortunately, my wife's car crapped out so she needed a new one first. It just so happened I was on PTO so I did test driving for her on a new vehicle and threw in a couple test drives for me, Select White RWD Mustang Mach E and a Premium ID.4.

Loved my test drives and had lunch with my wife who flat out said "well if you want to custom order the Mach E you can do that now since we know it will be like six months". So I got home super excited and built out an order with the closest dealership. This right here is my fault.

No I did not do any research on the dealer. After a couple days of just absorbing all things in research I noticed that my order had $3K mark up on the MSRP and it really REALLY made me mad. After going through my wife's purchase the same dealer group that just raked us was planning on doing it again. Then I found out the dealer I test drove just has MSRP plus taxes and fees (the normal screwing you over).

So after trying today to call in and see if I could change the dealership the support and marketing team said that I couldn't and that I would have to cancel my order with the dealership. I reached out to the dealership and they said

"You did everything online so Ford doesn't just forward that money to us. They send it to us after the fact. If you don't want it, or if it has something to do with pricing, I would say hold off until it arrives and then we can get that refunded thru the dealer if you can't cancel the order on your portal. I don't think you can once you ordered it. If you direly need the money, I can see what the manager says, but I think we are caught in the middle now due to you doing everything online and I didn't take the money at the store level."

So I politely state back: Ford let me know this has to go through the dealership in which I get back:
" If you have XPLAN you don't have that worry. That takes that market adjustment away. I will get with the manager about the money, but I can't do anything for you about the removal from your Ford account. As I said, because you did everything thru Ford online, this isn't as simple as giving you money we don't have. It will most likely be worked thru us, but I am sure you can understand if we don't have the money and Ford does, we will either do you a favor and cut you a check, or not. They don't forward that money to us right away. "

Which:
  1. X-Plan takes off like ~$900 so I don't know where he gets that
  2. They absolutely have the money, it's on my credit card statement to them.
  3. "We will either do you a favor and cut you a check, or not". What. The. Hell?
Has anyone else been able to cancel an order?

I still want the car, just not $3K above MSRP. At this point I don't want to order with the correct dealer until this gets fixed.

UPDATE:
I'm still pressing hard with the original dealer about getting a refund. After some additional research it's likely that Ford does have the money and it's not been distributed to the dealership so I'm less angry at them for that.

I did put in a new order with the other dealership. Worst case scenario is the original dealer does not refund me and when the car comes in I decline the order and they get to sell it to someone. Still pretty infuriating process.

Also to note I did get X-plan through MCA. $35 to save ~$900? Yes please.

I cancelled my Premium order that I placed in May because it was taking so long to get scheduled. A few weeks ago I went by the dealer and got my $500 deposit back.

The dealer might be telling you the truth about the deposit, but it should not take long for Ford to get them the money. Really that transition time should not matter to them and they should just give you the refund. IMO. If you do the order request on line on the Ford site the deposit does first go to Ford per my dealer.

For you, based on his message, X-plan is a savings of at least $3,900 (plus another $300 or so in taxes).

Since you just ordered, you have plenty of time to qualify for x-plan. If you don't have it through your employer, you could join a member association such as Mustang Club of America or the Experimental Aircraft Association.

If you'd like to cancel, keep pressing with the dealer. For example, bypass the sales person and go directly to the sales manager and/or dealer manager. They can cancel your order in Ford's system and they can allow you to get your deposit back, if they are kind/ethical enough to do so.

Just like @mkhuffman I cancelled one as well because I found the same car at a dealer that someone had cancelled. So I called my local dealer and they refunded the $500.

If you call them tomorrow ask for the internet sales person. They seem to be more "in the know". Some of the Ford dealerships even have someone trained specifically for the MachE.

You'll get the money back and worst case scenario you're out $500 instead of $3k ... but I think you'll get it back.

You could dispute it on your CC statement. That will send a quick message. Having to deposit before you know the foolish ADM is a big mistake on Ford's part. In my opinion, You have a perfectly legitimate reason to dispute the charge, the cost was $3000 more than shown on the website when ordering.

I would not let them hold my money for any length of time.

It puzzles me why more don't do this, especially after they read about it on the forum and have plenty of time to do it. I guess I value my money more than others.

The ADM thing stinks, and in my case the value changed after I had placed my order (dealer has promised to honor the original price), but I have to defend Ford on this one: the website does show "difference from MSRP" (what we call ADM) when you're choosing your dealer to place the order with. It may not be the easiest way to compare dealers, but in theory it's up-front. Granted, that doesn't mean they won't try to force add-ons (exterior/interior protection, VIN etching, etc) to justify charging a few thousand dollars more, but it means in theory the base price is already set.

The X-plan rules state that the car will be at MSRP, less the X-plan discount. So if your current dealer accepts X-plan PINs, the ADM will necessarily be knocked off. Go to your dealer and get it in writing (signed by the GM or Sales Manager) that they will accept X-plan on your order. If they won’t put it in writing, do what you need to do to get the order canceled and place an order with a different dealer. ??
