The only time this is true is if you are at a version 4 station and want to use the built in adapter. Otherwise you just unhook it put your adapter on and plug in. It will start automatically if you have set up plug n charge with Ford.

if you want to use the Tesla membership rate you need to use the Tesla app to start the charger.
I agree. This has been my experience. Really like the plug and charge working with Tesla chargers.

Agree. Much easier in the Lightning. I don’t have to worry about scraping the curb. I haven’t encountered one yet with such a high curb. 🤞
My eyeball said it was too high. I had no reason to check, because I could simply go sideways, as it was totally empty. One vehicle showed up in the 33 minutes we were charging. I also could have parked on the far left and blocked a destination charger and one SuperCharger, but again no need to.

On my recent trip, I spent $1,066.18 charging at Tesla SuperChargers. Assuming a flat 25% discount (it isn't, it varies), I saved about $355 with the membership paying $12.99 for it. That's a great reason to NOT use Plug & Charge.

I'm just curious: did you happen to calculate what gas would have cost to travel the same distance along your route considering the higher cost of gasoline these days?

I did a rough calculation. 1/2 the trip was in Canada, with gas at roughly $4.15 a gallon or higher (liters converted to gallons and exchange rate). My old F-150 would have gotten no more than 17mpg, probably less. 17 works out to 321 gallons of gas, and the amount I spent worked out to $3.45 a galloon at that efficiency. So with Canada higher AND with US higher when we came back (left March 5th, returned on the 22nd), we clearly saved money, but not a huge amount.

Thanks for this info. It's a good illustration of how expensive DC charging is! How much would home charging have cost you for average driving for 5,500 miles? Maybe 1/3 as much? Home charging is the EV super power!

Home charging for me is about 8 cents a mile. This trip worked to 20 cents, including free charging. But the comparison is irrelevant. We traveled through 6 states and 3 provinces. Skied 5 areas. Got to drive through endless fields, and past towering mountains, with the near silence of an EV. Priceless.

We are going on a long drive this weekend and I may end up using a Tesla charger for the first time. Anything I should be aware of? I've got a Tesla adapter and I've downloaded the app. From what I've read Tesla charging cables are short for the MME. Do you have to pull into the space to the right of the one you want to use? Seems kinda anti-social if its busy. Any advice or tips would be most welcome.
It depends:
- Some installs have a high curb that prevents avoiding the dreaded "park parallel to the curb" and there's no choice to not do that, or go elsewhere. You might find out in advance by looking at comments in Plug-Share and avoiding going there.
- Some installs have a pull through station that is a breeze for the MME, but there might be only one and you could be behind a large capacity towing vehicle causing a long wait. You could check with an App (Tesla or Ford) to see if it is occupied before going there.
- Taking two spaces to make the cable reach is sometimes a solution of necessity. I've done it when the site isn't too busy. Sometimes you can choose a tower on either end of the row to avoid actually taking up two designated charge slots.
Good luck!

One thing to make sure of .. twice i had a situation where i couldn't get the plug out of the car and i had to call the number on the charger and they told me to shut the car off and unlock the doors and sure enough it came right out without a problem... it was scary though.

That's because you're not following the new procedure for removing a fast charging cable of any type, since the update LOCKING THE PORT. The vehicle must either be unlocked, or you need to have the fob/phone in your pocket (and you still might need to unlock the vehicle).

There is zero need to shut off the car.

Yes and No. In my limited experience, I have pulled in, plugged in & NOT been able to use the FORD app, BUT COULD use the Tesla app. It was unusual, but that did happen to me.
I have charged at several locations including Tesla and never had to use any app to start the session. What are you doing wrong? Do you have Plug -n-Charge set up?

EYE didn't do anything wrong. Thanks for asking.
Charged at Tesla in the morning in Ashland Or. worked perfectly. FORD app
Drove a couple hours.
Stopped in Eugene where we had Charged a month earlier without a problem.
plugged in. Got an error code. Multiple (3) stalls. Charging Error.
tried the Tesla App. needed to update my charge card. did that.
Tesla app showed my location about 5 blocks from where I was & said that there were no charging locations near by. I was plugged in at the time - 1 of about 12. this process took about an hour.
Unplugged & plugged back in same stall.
It worked. Invoice from Tesla.
life was easy before computers.

Honestly, while most of us probably will try to be conscientious, the charging agreement allows our EVs to charge at Tesla chargers. If others are inconvenienced because Tesla charging stations don't accommodate non-Tesla EVs, that is part of the consequence. The inconvenience is temporary.

I recommend that you use a local Tesla SC today as a test, so you are comfortable with the process.

If you have not used your adapter before, it may be a little tight. Make sure it seats all of the way on the SC connector - listen for the click of the lock. Taking it off may be difficult after you charge. It can take some force the first time you use it.

As others have mentioned, make sure Ford Plug & Charge is turned on and set up with a credit card on file. This avoids the Tesla app, which has advantages if you use SC's enough to want a premium membership for the discount. As for parking, if the charger on the far right is open, angle into that so you don't block access to other chargers, getting as close to the curb as you are comfortable (use the front camera to guide yourself in), or look for a drive-up charger, which are at some Tesla locations. Here's an image of my MME on the right charger - I use small ramps to get over high curbs, but most stations aren't an issue.
Car ramps for Tesla chargers.webp
Hmmm.. which ramps do you have? I like the look of those.

We found a convenient bank of Tesla chargers at a QuickCheck on southbound Rt 17 in northern NJ as we exit off the NY State Thruway. It’s a great bathroom and snack stop on our frequent round trips to visit our kids. We anticipate the trip by charging to 100% on our level 2 home charger. The trip brings us down to the 40s so we need to plan in a 20-30 minute boost to cover local travel and the return home. The first time I used the angled approach. Worked but I was at too severe an angle and almost got boxed in by a Tesla that pulled to my left as I was in QuickCheck. I finished first and getting out required some very delicate back and forth manipulations while the Tesla owner sat in their car ignoring my presence as I came inches from their car. Not doing that again at a high volume station like this one! Since then, Ihave learned the techniques to pull straight aligning the left fender with the cord and carefully pull as far forward as possible. This works to stay within the lines as long as I use a stall oriented on the left side of the space as I noticed they alternate Left and right. Pulling in makes the front camera beep like crazy and is also a delicate operation. I’ve yet to bump or scrap the bottom of my Mach E but it could easily happen. I had been using my Ford adapter but only recently learned about the built in one and have been using that. Getting it to release has not been a consistent experience but it works if you keep at it. The best setup though is using the one side charger they have at this location. My wife and will grab that if available or sometimes when not in a hurry just wait for it. Here of a picture of the side station with the Tesla adapter in use. We plug in in and the Ford App allows us to watch over the progress as we play Lane Change or watch a You Tube video. I once had the high score on Lane change but as usual my wife is a superior game player and now holds the top three positions!
