This is a good video and shows another reason for the slower ev sales, dollars and cents. Anybody contemplating the purchase of buying an EV should view this and learn the math.

I think this is off the mark.

People that don't own EVs are clueless about charging costs.

Clickbait videos like this neglect to include the full battery at home and charging at hotels (often free) and other free charging. When 20% free is added to a trip, and people pay for a month of discounted charging, costs come down.

Costs are also widely different across the country.

I think charging costs have had very little impact on EV adoption.

I don’t need to give views to a YouTuber to realize that electricity at $0.50/kwh is more expensive per mile than $3.50 gasoline. The math ain’t that hard.

The cost part always makes me chuckle. 99.2% of US daily trips are less than 100 miles.

But the funny part is how people view gas prices and how they react to them, emotionally but stupidly. In the past (before EVs were talked about), gas prices shot up. When they did, people sold their "gas guzzlers" and bought gas efficient vehicles. The number of them that knew how to do a cost benefit analysis and see if that decision made economic sense would be small. When gas prices dropped, they sold their gas efficient vehicles and bought gas guzzlers again.

In 2007, when gas prices were just over $4 a gallon, I drove to work (20 miles on highway) at 65mph instead of 75mph. Took 2 minutes longer to get to work, got noticeably better mpg. I can tell you that nobody else slowed down, but they bitched about gas prices...

So yes, with the national price of gas right now at $3.069 per AAA, demand for EVs is softer overall than it would be if the price was $5 a gallon like in 2022.

And of course, with gas prices down, the economic analysis of a trip via a gas vehicle or EV changes.

Last statistics I saw showed that 81% of charging was done at home. There are a number of so-called media outlets (and some fake ones pretending to be news sites) that are propagating all the EV scare tactics, likely paid by big oil.

As I said this video is for somebody contemplating purchase of an EV since they need to understand that an EV without a home EVSE is going to cost more at the current gas prices and newer DCFC pricing.

The math is the same whether you own an EV or are contemplating one. Before I bought my Mach-E, I knew what it was going to cost to charge it. That’s why I installed my L2 EVSE before taking delivery.

I installed a L2 charger at my home and in 1 year of charging is what it used to cost me in 2.5 months. I’ve taken 4 long trips in my car in almost 3 years of ownership. It costs maybe a little more using dc fast chargers but for total ownership cost it’s not close especially when you add in maintenance costs to an ice vehicle for same miles

I wanted an EV and am at an age where I either needed to do it now, or I never would. Also didn't fool myself that selling my great RAV4 and buying an MME would save me money. As EVs become more dominant they are putting gas prices under pressure. An unintended consequence is ICEs may continue to be almost as cheap to drive as EVs.

Something less than 10% of my car's mileage was fueled by public charging (most of that via the complimentary KWh that Ford included with the car in 2021). The rest has been fueled by a home L2 using energy credits from my excess PV generation. I have spent *very* little on fuel for my MME. ?ā€ā™‚? Of course, that doesn't mean I'm still spending more monthly since I am paying my loan payment now and had no loan payment prior. ??

EVs only make sense if you can charge at home. They're shit for road trips for a myriad of reasons, and in winter the suck gets significantly worse. If I can't 100% for-sure make a trip on the charge I left with, it's a no-brainer to leave the MME and take the truck.

People who buy an EV and are ignorant to the facts about EVs, are going to leave a large trail of 'horror stories' in their wake. A lot of people are ignorant and will have to learn the realities of EVs the hard way.

As an experienced EV user, I’m afraid 10 minutes of a YouTuber chatting bubbles bores me to tears.

Didn’t wish to include all those YouTubers in same category but since you mention………

Listening to those whose expertise is limited by their own [lack of] experience is pointless and potentially dangerous?
