I will test this when the problem happens again. For now the dealer has determined it is a faulty valve for the coolant. The dealer has had a similar issue with some of the Ford Lightning. The part for this fix is backordered until March. Currently the car is producing heat but over the next couple months things could get a bit chilly.
There have been several reports of stuck coolant diverter valves on the Lightning forum.

Just experienced what appears to be the same issue you have on my Dec ‘20 build June ‘21 delivered Premium RWD ER.

Mine turned out to be a failing PTC heater which is the coolant heater for the heating system.

Heat would come and go seemingly randomly.

I think your car really needs a proper guided diagnosis by competent dealer because fault could be symptomatic of a range of defects.

Once replaced, my heater worked like I feel certain it never worked since car was new.
@Mach-Lee @Maquis My car is currently at dealer, for the same issues : inconsistent heating. They want to change PTC (1900$CAD+tx). I asked for Ford Canada's Goodwill gesture on this. They will call me back. But I am also planning to sue them if I have to pay. I might need to find all owners here in the forum who that happened, as proof of early failing equipment. What can you propose?

In short, dunno🤷🏼‍♂️

The way it works in UK is that if it’s in warranty Ford pay dealer to resolve, if it happens outside warranty it’s owners liability who suffers the cost.

If car is bought from dealer or Ford direct and benefits from the investment in a full dealer service history Manufacturer often will make a so-called goodwill contribution to cost of repairs.

Suing for this don’t work as you’d have to prove negligence, defective design or manufacturing defect which is very difficult.

I have worked with prominent high profile consumer organisations in UK and often featured on national TV on similar cases amongst many others and my experience is that if you can’t get some consumer organisation interested who are able to publically shame Manufacturers into accepting out-of-warranty liability by flushing ‘em out of the undergrowth at risk of bad publicity you’re stuffed🤷🏼‍♂️

Not sure about Canada but US have ODA & NHTSA who kick ass compared with UK’s equivalent which in my opinion are toothless but this fault doesn’t really fall into safety recall territory so is unlikely to become a repair enforced upon a Manufacturer by whatever authorities your local area has.

The dealer repaired the car last week by replacing part number L1MZ 18E254 A, which according to Google is the PTC. Heat has worked well since the repair. Traveled to Lake Placid, NY and home (about 5hrs round trip) in subzero Farhenheit temperatures last weekend. We monitored the heater using the car scanner during preconditioning per for leaving. Continued to monitor while traveling and then while dc fast charging. Very interesting how the car manages heat in all of these situations. At home we keep the car connected to the charger. We do not have a garage. The car now regularly (about every 6hrs or so) draws a little power to keep the battery happy. It all seems to be working as expected. Thank you to all who helped and shared.

Same here. I must give it to them: while I though it was a software issue, they were right by changing the PTC!

What was the final cost?
They initially quoted me 1900$CAD+tx. After talking with Ford Canada, they accepted a "Good will gesture" for 1025$CAD+tx
