That seems excessive. I think the panel retails for somewhere around $1,400.
30 years ago we had a 1987? Toyota van, where the seats are over the front wheels. We were camping along with our dog, a JRT. Wife let the dog in the passenger side, leash on and the dog takes his place on the engine cover. I drive forward a few feet and dog flies off the engine cover and slams into the door footwell. He shook it off and jumped back up with 6" of leash instead of 6'.I did my best to install the rack correctly. The supports rest solely on the metal portion of the roof.
But with regard to stress, let me tell you a little story about carrying a 17' sea kayak. The bow line from my kayak got loose and caught under the right front tire. The tire pulled the line, which pulled th1e bow of my kayak, nearly breaking it in half at the front rack. Later, I discovered that the force had also pulled the rack hard enough into the car to dent the metal under the rack support. That was a lot of force. I have no idea whether or how that force affected the glass; the glass breakage occurred several months later.
That’s a ridiculous price. I had mine cracked about a year ago. The price for a new one was $1700 from Ford. I ended up getting them to pay most of that through the warranty but that’s a longer story. Maybe you should check with Safelight.
Other places besides Ford has them for as much as $1300….. again not including the labor. Anything else you are getting done besides the panoramic glass?$4800????? Where did you go?!? That is a little too much… more like way too much! I just did a quick search and Ford’s price is $930 for the panoramic glass… I don’t think labor is $4000. I would get a second opinion….
