UPDATE: Mach E is up and running after replacing 12v battery. Now I'm $530 poorer lol. The good news is it was in stock, have my car back in under a day and no other major issues were detected. (they did a full health inspection).

oh and free car wash (yes i know all these "freebees" it was built into $530 lol)

Is my 12v battery dead and needs replaced or bigger issue?

We have a 2021 Mach e premium. We bought it new 3 years ago. came home from work, we had dinner and then I had to go to store. But the car would not respond. No lights, doors won’t open. App isn’t reponding etc.

The first thing I did was grab my jumper pack and opened the frunk. I removed the plastic and hooked it up to the battery. The car turned on. After having it on for 15 minutes, I turned it off and it compelty shut down and would not turn on again. I had to jump the car again. This time I kept it longer, even went for a drive. About 30 minutes and turned it off again and car died.

So back to my question. Is this basic dead battery issues or something bigger.

and yes I’m taking it to dealer tomorrow morning. Just want to see if anyone had similar issues and was easily fixed with a new battery. My car is freshly out of warranty! Lol

You live in hot Texas, so your 12V battery is only going to last about 3 years. You just need to replace it, that's all.

it certainly sounds like a dead/dying 12v and the time interval seems about right

What are the signs of a dying battery? Is there a way to predict it based on ODBII information or something else? Or is a 3-year replacement the best we have?

My car is 3 months short of being 3 years old, so it's about time to worry about it a little.

I'm just over the 3yr mark as well. No signs of a bad 12v yet.

I guess I should just add it to the list

Here's a link to a great FAQ about the 12v battery that _may_ help: https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/12v-battery-faq.32744/

However, I'm not really sure there's a great way to know if the battery is close to failure other than constantly testing it. If it was a normal ICE car battery, there are usually warning signs that it's not holding a charge, but with this AGM in the EV, it seems to very quickly decline and die with little warning.

Supposedly, my dealer tested my battery yesterday and said it failed the test. I've never had any problem with that battery, it always held it's charge, didn't drop off, etc, etc. In other words, I'd never have guessed there was a problem with it. My car was built 13 months ago and has less than 3200 miles.

The modem can't update the Ford servers when the LVB is dead and they can die quickly when the battery is done. The number shown on the Ford site will reflect the last poll before the battery fell off the edge which may show relatively high - even when it is completely dead.

That makes sense. It showed 100% last night since car was dead so it was the last reading. This morning when I jumped it it said 0% and when I got to the dealer it read 97%.

So im guessing it is the 12v dead/failing that does not hold charge,

FIVE HUNDRED AND THIRTY DOLLARS? US Dollars? For a $200 battery? Wow.. you were screwed. There's simply no polite way to say it. Screwed royally.

There are threads on here were people have had Ford send out a mobile repair van to replace their battery and they paid less than 1/2 what you did.

Yep, It was expensive. I should have shopped around a different dealers for the best deal, but I needed the car fast for work. Plus I think half the cost was diagnostic. It was out of warranty, so those aren't free.

I could have bought the battery for $180 and replaced it myself. Im not afraid to take the car apart. I was more concerned it was a bigger issue than the battery. Or I could have told them no diagnostic, just replace battery. But like I said, I was afraid it was a bigger problem like some battery module or something from the recall.
