Hi Forum friends,
I have a 2021 Mach E job 1. It has been a challenge from time to time. I have had a few recalls “Windshield” “SW updates at the dealership” and a front motor replacement to deal with over the past few years.

I recently noticed a clicking sound coming from the rear end, It didn't matter if I was using 1 pedal or not. The dealer has determined that programming was needed via a service bulletin To correct the problem.

The dealer wants to charge me for this programming. I have 63K on the MME and do have a 3rd party warranty. They want $100 for the service.
I am planning on fighting the charge when I pick up the MME tomorrow.

I hope that some Independent shops start doing SW updates in NJ. Seems like its a service that will be needed.
If anyone has experience please pass on your suggestions.
@Ford Motor Company does this charge for programming something new? If it was a service bulletin shouldn’t it be covered by Ford?

here' a massive thread on updating the car via fdrs. I don't have enough confidence in my tech skills to do it personally. https://www.macheforum.com/site/thr...ach-e-with-fdrs-alternative-to-forscan.10217/

I'm not sure I understand... does the dealer want $100 to do the service irrespective of your 3rd party warranty? Or is that the deductible for your 3rd party warranty?

$100 isn’t a bad fee for a repair if it fixes your problem.
Gotta be cheaper than a half-shaft replacement.
You are hoping 3rd party shops start doing software updates so you don’t have to pay the dealer. But are you expecting the shops to not charge for their time?

Once the warranty ends, no software updates are going to happen for free unless it's a recall. That's just fact. Whether your 3rd party warranty covers it or not (apparently it does with a $100 deductible) is up to that warranty.

Not a service bulletin- that is info for the consumer and for the technician. Only safety recalls are free, I do not know what an oasis computer at ford cost’s but I would say couple hundred thousand for the servers and such, My scanner and J2534 box for programming cost 6/7 thousand - so we have to charge something and then the minutes it takes and the know how. So I would say a 100 is not bad

TSBs != recalls or other things covered by warranty, so if you're out of warranty, it comes out of your pocket. As others have noted, either the dealer is charging you $100 (which is not bad,) or they know that's your deductible or minimum cost for your third-party warranty.

A TSB is not a recall. It’s a Technical Service Bulletin. It can cover vehicles out of warranty. Primary intent is to help point the Tech to a solution given certain symptoms. If the issue is safety then it’s typically a recall. But that depends on severity and failure rate.

Let's be clear here.

Anything that isn't a recall isn't covered by warranty. If there is something wrong with the vehicle, a TSB may tell them how to fix it, but it's NOT FREE.

Some CSPs are covered beyond the standard warranty. For example, CSP 24N05 (door hem problem) is covered for 10 years, 100,000 miles.

I am curious how a software update is going to solve clicking in the REAR ? What exactly is the diagnosis, TSB and repair they are proposing ?
