ok but now we're back to pedestrian alert vs. backup chime. These instructions appear to be the pedestrian alert that everyone agrees is legally required?
a) it's legally required for Ford to put it in the car before sale, but it's not legally required for it to remain. you won't be hauled off to jail or written a ticket for disabling it
b) no reason to think there is a different speaker for the backup sound

One thing I would be concerned with is the car throwing a code or whatever the equivalent of the Check Engine Light is when you disable this speaker

I'll find out and post it here exactly what happens when I disconnect the speaker. I will have my friend's car to tinker with later this afternoon. If it does throw up a code, I can either muffle the sound or if want to disconnect completely I can put a resister inline so the system thinks the speaker is still connected. Believe me, there is more than one way to deal with this.
I was thinking the same thing -- however, be careful. There could be serious legal ramifications if you ever were to hit a pedestrian. That's what worries me.

It definitely seems like that. But... why?
I believe that's what happened. I can see his profile when viewing the forum when not logged in, but I cannot while logged in.
... What did we do? Now I feel bad for some reason? :(
Dunno. Maybe it was unintentional? Now I guess we'll never know when his car finally arrives in paradise.

I think that settles it. The backup beeper is probably just an afterthought added by somebody with a bright idea when the car was in design.
There's also not a strict requirement for what the sound is, just that there is a sound that meets a certain volume threshold. One thing I will be slightly jealous of Tesla drivers is their ability to use "snake jazz" instead of a white noise-type sound... https://thedriven.io/2020/08/21/elo...-list-of-external-sounds-tesla-cars-can-play/

Looks like a backup beeper was added to the 2020 Kia Niro as well. Maybe that's where Ford got the idea.

I suppose it could depend on the state, but the regulation requiring Ford to have the noise is a federal law that mandates what goes into cars offered for sale in the US. The law does not apply to consumers. States pass laws about what is required for a vehicle to be operated on public roadways. No state that I am aware of mandates that the pedestrian noise maker operate to be legal to operate on public streets. On top of that, if a state did mandate it, how would you get caught? Some states do safety inspections, so it's possible it could get caught in that process but daily driving the cops aren't going to be listening out to see if your pedestrian noise is working under 20 mph or whatever the speed threshold is

The Nissan Leaf also beeps in reverse.
You can tell which companies have been involved in multi-billion dollar safety litigation (Ford) and those who have not (Tesla, whose cars you can make fart when you put into reverse)

The Bolt had a fuse that, when blown/removed, disabled the pedestrian sound (and only the sound).
....or so I understand from their forums.
