We are about 500 miles from home on our first MachE road trip - we’ve had our ‘24 since January and aside from testing out how to charge here and there charge exclusively at home. We used ABRP and Plug Share to map out routes and got here with a 25% charge - totally seamless - stopping at a 60 bay Tesla Supercharging convenience store. We planned dinner at a hotel that had tesla chargers free for diners and guests and I got a charging fault on 3 different ones. Plug Share gave it a 10.0 rating and other Fords have left comments (Lightning) so I assumed that meant they were compatible. I looked at old forums and lifted the cable, turned the car off and waited 5 minutes, I varied which part I plugged in first. It would cycle and then fault orange with a message in the car to “charging fault check the manual.” The hotel chargers were Tesla Wall Connectors - a bay of 10 with 3 in use by Teslas. I know some of the Tesla chargers are not compatible with our adapter but I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that if it had reviews by Ford’s it would work.

After dinner we went to an EVConnect LV2 around the corner and first try was also a charging fault. Moved to another one and it finally connected.

We found an ultra-fast about 10 miles away and plan to top up there before we head back home, but now I’m a little nervous about the faults happening again.

So what should I know, think about, do differently?

Got it. So the second fault at the LV2 was just leftover?

I’ve charged my ‘21 Select many times at multiple sites across the western US and faults have been extremely rare. Multiple faults is concerning. As was mentioned, be sure you are using the correct adapters, and test them out locally so that you’re confident they work.

Were your charging on Tesla's L2 chargers or DCFC? As noted Fords adapter is for all pins and is a DCFC adapter not a L2. If you were using it for L2 you definitely confused it and it had a hard time to communicate. Try a few more charges and let us know. Hoping for a good trip (y)

Lectron Level 2 (destination) Tesla to J1772 on top. Ford's own Tesla DCFC to CCS1 on the bottom.

If you want to charge at hotels / shopping center / parking lots with Tesla level 2 chargers, I would recommend buying a NACS to J-1772 adapter. The only three brands / model I would buy is A2Z Stellar, UMC TeslaTap or Lectron J-1772

I personally bought the 48 amp Lectron and gave it away to a friend and prefer to use the 80 amp A2Z Stellar with built in lock and compact design.

I would recommend sticking with known brands like Lectron, A2Z and TeslaTap

I would recommend the A2Z Stellar NACS to J-1772 adapter which is available for $82 with flash sale going on right now. It’s got a compact build, 80 AMP capability, a built in lock, good customer service / warranty and overbuilt for futureproofing.

This adapter is used with Tesla home chargers and destination chargers commonly found at hotels / shopping center / parking lots.

The level 2 Stellar adapter will pay for itself overtime by avoiding an expensive fast charge on the road every night while you sleep at the hotel with Tesla destination charging.

You can use the same Tesla Find Us link to locate Tesla Level 2 destination chargers.

A2Z EV has a sale going on right now for NACS to CCS1 adapters ($170 to $145) / A2Z EV Stellar NACS to J-1772 AC Level 2 Adapter ($95 to $82) after discount code to save 15% off and get free shipping. The coupon also applies to AC J-1772 extension cords and AC - NACS extension cords ($165 to $140)

Click the link to chose your below products and stack the temporary code "FLASHSALE" to save 15%.

NACS To J1772 adapter (Tesla Destination Charger for Hotels / Shopping centers) | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty

A2Z EV Typhoon Pro NACS To CCS1 adapter - DCFC adapter - DC adapter 500A

A2Z EV NACS TO CCS1 Adapter - Save 15% / Free Shipping + bundle the A2Z Stellar AC NACS to J-1772 adapter for $82 additional after discount code "FLASHSALE".

A2Z EV NACS to J-1772 - AC adapter for home / hotel destination chargers - 80A

A2ZEV NACS To J1772 adapter (Hotel Destination Charger for Hotels / Shopping centers) | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty

A2Z Stellar Adapter NACS to J-1772 for Destination and Home charging. This adapter literally pays for itself

Here is a hotel Tesla destination charger being used with the A2Z EV Stellar adapter.

The Rivian you see below is using a DCFC Level 3 charger with a Typhoon Pro adapter. This grocery store also has free level 2 Tesla charging stations that work with J-1772 vehicles as long as you have the appropriate adapter.

Same- discovered you don’t need the adapter for Tesla Destination chargers- just plug it in.

What’s all this adapter noise for Tesla Destination chargers? My first big roadtrip, I was trying to use my Lectron Supercharger adapter at hotel Destination charger, suffering your same frustration. The kind lady at the front desk told me to just plug it in without the adapter; it worked perfectly. And has every time since.

well, in the US, most tesla destination chargers have a Tesla NACS plug so they will not plug into the Mach-e CCS1 charge port without an adapter.

I think there is a circumstance, where a charge fault, which may have occurred for a legitimate reason on the first charger will happen again on the next charger even though it shouldn’t have on that one. I believe @Mach-Lee may have posted some guidance in the past about ways to clear or reset the car if you feel like that circumstance is happening.

I think once you got it to work you then know that is no longer the issue.

Hope you did not have the fault return.

well, in the US, most tesla destination chargers have a Tesla NACS plug so they will not plug into the Mach-e CCS1 charge port without an adapter.
This is in Utah and Wyoming- worked fine without adapter-2024 ER AWD.

You're confused. You cannot plug a Tesla Destination adapter into your Mach-E without an adapter. Some (a few) are Tesla Universal Chargers with adapters you click on by pushing nozzle up, but the majority need an adapter.

Then they were likely not Tesla Destination Chargers. Alternatively, it is possible that they were Tesla Destination Chargers with the J1772 nozzle, Tesla did make those for a while.

These are the EV connectors currently on the market:
J1772 is the port you have on the Mach E.
CCS1 is also on you Mach E and has two lower pins for DC charging
Tesla (listed as supercharger here) is for both AC and DC, and is the connector most destination chargers have.
CHAdeMo is for Nissan Leafs.
