Ford Charger for Mach-E

Yeah that’s pretty much it. It’s on display at the auto shows if anyone goes. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

• It's fantastic that it is being included for free
• I will keep it in the trunk for road trips and get an outdoor rated hardwired EVSE, because I too have too much crap in my 1 car garage to fit my car in it

Why's that?

I'm thinking about having it high on the wall so i can have it go up the ceiling and over in the middle of my garage. Or have the outlet on the ceiling if the cable isn't long enough. I don't know yet.

I guess I'm more of your nightmare! LOL

How else was I going to charge without a driveway? (That is a 50ft J1772 extension cord).

I've since also used that when camping and the power post is at the rear of the site and my ClipperCreek EVSE can't reach the "road". Works quite well.

I really hope the EV team at Ford understands that putting charging stations in places people want to go and along routes to get there is vital to sales and adoption.

Tesla seemed to understand that and is self-funding the Supercharger and destination charger network.
Ford Europe seems to understand that and is part of the Ionity consortium.

Will Ford pony up to buy into an existing DCFC provider to encourage adoption?
Will Ford get destination (240V) chargers at places where they'll be needed; boat launches, campgrounds, etc?

Huge opportunity here. Just require that each dealership that want's to sell EVs going forward put in a couple publicly accessible DCFC Charging stations.

Cost is spread out, 1000s of new charging stations available and the dealerships get to try to sell people new cars while their cars are charging ... win/win/win

I agree. I think the Ford dealers that get EV certified are going to install some level 2 chargers. It would be great to have 24 hour access to 25kw - 50kw chargers at Ford dealers as a road trip backup plan!

Cool, they don't want to invest they don't get to sell the car.

Realistically though it would be a payback. They are going to need them to charge vehicles if they are going to sell them. It would bring potential buyers in that basically have to stay and walk around. Get a few extra car sales a month and it's well paid for.

I expect they will have private chargers for their own internal needs. As you say, they're going to need them in order to sell and service EVs.

But expecting them to be public chargers is a whole different matter. That's like expecting a dealership to be retail gas station too.

And I really don't want to see the price of my Mach-e raised to pay for providing charging facilities for the general public.

Also why would your price go up? Ford sets the MSRP. The dealerships pay for the charging stations as a buy in to sell the vehicles. If the dealership tries to pass that cost onto you, you go to the next dealer. Done.. no price change.

EV Certified Ford Dealers already should have at least one Level-2 EVSE. They did that when the Focus Electric was released.

The point was, chargers aren't free. Someone pays that cost. And you can bet that extra cost will get passed on to customers in some form.

It wouldn't surprise me if a dealership let their own customers plug in to one of their chargers if they happen to be open, if they bought the vehicle there. We see that now with some dealerships giving things like free oil changes and car washes for a year if you bought the car there. But I wouldn't expect to them do that for other dealership's customers (which is what I'm gleaming from your comments, hoping for an extra "network" of chargers).

If they're certified to service EVs and battery packs, I'm guessing they'll need to be able to diagnose and test at DCFC speeds too. But I doubt those charger(s) would be open to the public either.

So I can’t really comment on plans to expand the DC network or the nature of the relationship with Electrify America, but the NA DC network is expanding reaaaalllly rapidly, with 800 sites by Dec. 2021 compared to around 158 sites today.

Rivian says that they're trying to get DC Fast Chargers at national parks. So if they can succeed, that'd be terrific for adoption.
