Either way, it’s being released in batches, and you don’t like it. Got it. I still think this is the right way to do it, even if it creates “why didn’t I get the update when other people did” anxiety.

If you want to be like them, do #4.

That’s the only solution to your concerns. Even though they may have only been on the waitlist, it seems that helped them get the update sooner.

Because I think the updates have been fine. We get lots of them pretty frequently. And as I have said before, I’m ok (and actually prefer) the way they send them in batches.

but WHY? how does it benefit anyone getting updates in batches? If you're trying to say batches are safer, then WTF is the point of EA if not to quash major bugs before general release? Ford doesn't need to reinvent the software release cycle that works for everyone else.

I have a '21 job 1 premium rwd std range. It's been continuously enrolled in the EAP since June 30, 2021.

And yet, the most recently received Power-Up is 4.1.1, more than six months ago. It's received two "priority updates" since then, just no further Power-Ups.

Why?? Maybe it's because my dealer updated a few modules in March? Who knows. I've contacted EAP about it multiple times and they've checked with the OTA team. That team says the vehicle is up to date, not missing anything.

Still seems a bit strange to have no Power-Ups since March, nothing since 4.1.1... but this is the current state of the OTA system: opaque and mysterious, regardless of EAP enrollment.

Going in circles at this point, but you keep asking questions so I’ll try to answer the why again.

How does batches benefit people?
It gets more people updated faster. Just like in the 50 steaks ordered analogy. An average of 25 minutes is faster than 50 minutes for everyone. And we aren’t getting the “same steak/update.” We have different batteries, motors, hardware and software versions for all the different years and models. It’s not a “one size fits all” for everyone.

Is it safer? Yes. That is the point of EA. We get it first, they get our feedback, changes things then send to everyone else.

Example- the “smarter” range estimator. It was a hot mess for EA. We let them know and they fixed it before sending it to everyone.

This is why I prefer it this way.

Yeah it’s a bit mysterious since they don’t ever explain why different vehicles get different stuff.

The job 1 2021 people in particular seem to be alone in a lot of things (frunk button, Bluecruise).

Seems like this whole debate comes down to the same thing- people screaming “its not FAIR that we don’t all get the same thing at the same time.”

And they’re right, it’s not fair. But I would bet that if we could sit behind closed doors at Ford and understand all the reasons things are rolled out like they are it would at least make some sense. Someone has to be first, someone has to be last, and I bet that there are some hardware limitations that determine why we don’t all get the same features and updates.

you're right, you are going in circles. earlier you said the batches were based on the model year and trim, and they can't work on them in parallel. but that is not what we're talking about anymore. It's not relevant here.

We have established that I am months behind another owner with the same model year and trim. please explain how that "gets more people updated faster". It's the same update, it should not take ford anymore time to push it to me than it does for anyone else with the exact same car.

but not MONTHS apart. that is the issue here, not who is first or last. MONTHS. If I was literally the last person to receive updates but it was within a week or so of the first person it would not be an issue. I wouldn't even notice it.

No, you actually don’t want that. What you want is fast, stable, and frequent software updates. Tesla misses on at least one of those prerequisites. That leads to the universal refrain of every Tesla owner I personally know when their car gets an update, “What did it break this time?”

Ford doesn’t have an issue with being able to update job 1 car’s with a remote Frunk release — they have chosen not to do so.

if you’re genuinely that dissatisfied about the pace of software updates, this may not be the car for you. There are other choices. Many of them have even worse OTA update track records though.

The short answer (from other people here who work in software development, not me) is that this stuff takes time. Longer than you think, and longer than you like.

Not just months, years in some cases.

It’s not like Ford is just sitting on these updates waiting to release them in order to make money or something (like a new version of an iPhone).

If it was all lightning fast, my 2021 would have just come with all the best software. There would be no need to keep sending updates every few weeks in 2023.

And you weren’t the last. The 2023 people just got the update this week as well.
