What was the final repair that resolved the problem?
Just got the car back from dealership fix attempt #3. This time, they replaced the Control Assembly Audio Visual Unit LJ8Z-19H405-K. Did another 360 camera reset.

So, to recap for those not interested in reading the first 37 pages of this thread,

  • June / July-ish started receiving Front Camera Fault sporadically
  • By August-ish Front Camera Fault turned permanent on, which brings loss of Cruise Control and other basic functions
  • August - Dealer trip #1 - Replace IPMB, perform 360 camera reset
  • Within 1 day, fault message re-appears, within a couple weeks becomes permanent again
  • September - Dealer trip #2 - Replace IPMA, perform 360 camera reset, reprogrammed APIM and TCU
  • Within 1 day, fault message re-appears, within about 4-5 weeks becomes permanent again
  • Late November - Dealer trip #3 - Replace Control Assy A/V unit, perform 360 camera reset

After about four weeks with no errors, had three inside 5 miles on the freeway yesterday, failure warnings, loss of cruise control, then it came right back. After the third warning it took abbot 15 minutes for the front camera to return.

How difficult is it to replace the cable, and will Ford cover this under warranty?

They are slated to replace my windshield camera/coax. They'll need to pull down the driver's side headliner and re-glue it back as the coax cable goes from the front camera all the way to the back of the car.

They said it would take a day and that the 36,000/3 year covers it.

The cable/camera was 'supposed' to be in yesterday, but no word, I'll call them tomorrow afternoon to see if the Thursday delivery brings it. He said they would call me when it 'is in his hands' and then they'll arrange an appointment.

/After so many of these Coax issues, whey don't the dealers let FOMOCO know of the issue and the solution? I read this thread all the way from 01 - 43 to find an answer and saw 2 or 3 buybacks because of this issue that can be fixed with a $40 coax cable...

My coaxial cable is being right now at the dealer's expense. Plus loaner vehicle.

14D202H in the picture is the part.

I recently started having this issue, and reading thru 40+ pages of the thread is taking a while....
Is it most likely that the harness 14d202h needs to be replaced, or maybe just disconnected and re-connected ?

I am thinking the harness may have been damaged or not reconnected properly during the Windshield Recall?

I don't like that cable routing, the connector should come off the camera at the 9 o'clock position instead of the 11 o'clock position so it isn't being bent sharply or touching the windshield. Maybe that's why they want to replace yours now.

For those that don't know, coaxial cables are fragile and should never be bent sharply. All turns should be gradual with a large enough turn radius. Bending a coax cable sharply permanently damages it. That's not a design flaw, that's just how coax cables are. These intermittent cable faults are likely going to be due to improper cable handling or routing at some point in the past, either during assembly or during previous dealer work. Most mechanics have zero clue how to handle a coax or sensitive data cable properly, so it would not surprise me if many were damaged during the glass recalls when the windshield was removed or the headliner dropped.

I also want to reiterate that some pre-collision faults are software related and not hardware related. Cable faults are only one cause of many.

sounds like first step would be to disconnect/re-connect just to be sure the connections are firm? They are a snap connection, or something the average tech might have screwed up during windshield recall?

then replace the harness?

It’s been 2 months and over 6k miles since I fixed my car and I’ve not had a single issue with it since.
I'm just over a month and 1k+ mi. Absolutely nothing new to report except happy systems and enjoyable drives in the LA/OC countryside, ha-ha. ?

and so.... It appears that harness replacement was the solution....

I may pop off the headliner, and disconnect/re-connect the camera to see if maybe it just wasn't fully seated after windshield recall re-gluing

In my car, over the course of 3 trips to the service dept, they:
(1) Updated almost all the software in the car twice and replaced the Image Processing Module in the rear of the car. This did not fix it, the problem persisted.
(2) Replaced the front (windshield) camera. I've never had the problem since that time.
(3) Replaced the front coax cable just to be sure. I still haven't had a recurrence.
So if I had to say, in my case I think it was the camera.
My understanding is that this problem is ultimately identified as a communication error.
The source of the error could be any one (or more) of: software, camera, coax windshield cable, body harness, image processing module. For those of us who have had the headliner and/or windshield removed and replaced, I would guess that the coax cable or the camera (in that order) are more likely the culprit.
Although I have elected at this time not to have the pano glass/windshield recalls performed, I have had the windshield replaced once, which required removing, replacing and recalibrating the camera, and obviously disconnecting and manipulating the cable and connector as part of that process.
I wouldn't assume it's the coax cable in every instance, but apparently it is a relatively inexpensive part.

Can @Ford Motor Company or anyone with access to their system tell us if replacing the coax camera cable has gone out to dealers as an all-model warranty replacement item or is it on a case-by-case basis?

My failures are back to happening daily.

Judging by the numbers popping up on the Forum..... I'm wondering if this is under consideration for an official Recall? especially since it does affect safety with Assist features dropping out

Good morning! What I can do is look into things on my end. If you're willing to send us a private message with your VIN and dealership info, I'd be happy to do so.

I called my Dealership.... soonest they can see a non-emergency for diagnostics is 3/2, (almost 2 months out). If @Ford Motor Company can do a remote scan for DTC with FDRS and verify front camera issues by codes thrown and allow my dealership to order the replacement Harness (part number 14d202h ) so that it is available in their Inventory before 3/2, that would be great. Otherwise, sending my VIN and dealership info seems like a waste of everyone's time.
