I was using 1 pedal driving in stop and go on the freeway the other day and had a guy behind me make a hard stop to avoid hitting me. It’s totally possible that he would have almost hit me even if I were using conventional braking - with brake lights on. But it got me wondering whether there is some level of safety “risk” with 1PD, and what those of you with more than a month of MME ownership think. And whether any of you have adjusted your 1PD use accordingly.
Yes I've been. I think u less you're off 60% or more off the gas/electrons on 1pd it doesn't light up.

Happen to be in slow moving traffic when it happened

1pedal drive is not the issue. The issue is all the idiots that follow too damn close and don’t pay attention. These days everyone thinks they are in a freaking NASCAR race.

And this is why I wish @Ford Motor Company would enable a function on the IPC to illuminate the taillights on the vehicle icon when they are activated. Tesla does this on their center infotainment display and I truly appreciated it because I had much concern about the threshold of taillight illumination during release of 1PD

I don’t think 1-P and brake light are really an issue. When adaptive cruise cruise first started back in late 90’s (don’t want to give away my age here), there was a huge discussion about that and brake lights too, so brake lights now would come on on a predetermined setting on downhill or deceleration whether it’s 1-PD or adaptive cruise control.

Regarding the collision scenario, it is worth noting that when you are stopped in 1PD mode the car electronically activates the brake calipers, so while you may not have used any friction slowing down, the brakes are holding you at a stop, so if someone hits you from behind, the brakes are already on.

If you are creeping along in stop and go traffic if you put any pressure on the pedal the brake lights will go OFF. They only come on if your foot is completely off the pedal.

I’ve had people get pissed at me thinking I’m brake-checking them on the freeway if I happen to let off on the pedal a little too quickly.
If somebody rear-ends you, I don’t think it’s a brake light problem.

Not just Tesla - I have it in our '19 ICE Subaru.

I have had zero problems with 1-p.... (the brake lights do come on when you are braking by the way).

I almost got rear-ended when the automatic emergency brakes slammed on the brakes as I was making a left at an intersection catching up to the car in front of me 'too fast' , and the system slammed the brakes and almost left me hanging in the middle of the intersection as well as rear-ended from the person behind ME.

I have since turned off all the driver - assist things, except for the blind spot alert. The 'side collision alert' however will not STAY off, which drives me crazy as it sometimes beeps and flashes to alert me to a situation I already saw and evaluated. I find it more distracting than helpful.
