Well, the current administration set the CAFE penalties to zero. Because of the way they passed the bill they couldn't get rid of CAFE, but they could change the amount of the penalties.Believe it or not, CAFE is probably the main reason these smaller engines are pumping out the higher numbers. Trying to squeeze out every bit of fuel by making high compression and perfectly timed engines. No sure about what the CAFE penalties are, but may be the reason Ford can sell Mach-e so cheap and offset some of the other big and low MPG vehicles in the line up ( read F series pickups)
It will be interesting on how the US car companies react to that since hopefully they play a bit longer game as far as what to do with their cars than one administration.
