I literally listened to the convo live and thought I was going insane with all these fokes saying it was going to be free. They both basically said it would be priced accordingly, which to me is not free, so I am glad I am not as insane as my wife leads me to believe, :p.
I think the "Free" people are delusional. Way too big a cost for Tesla/Ford. The Magic Dock roll out is shockingly slow, don't you agree? Why? Because Musk is thinking "F" the Magic Dock (that Tesla has to pay for); let our new customers (SC) buy an adapter either from Tesla or from Ford that Tesla gets a cut from. So, Telsa makes $ and does not have to retrofit Thousands of Super Chargers. Folks, last time I looked Musk is not generally interested in "Loosing $".

He cut a deal to roll out 3,500 of these by end of 2024. That deal includes some compensation from the government one would assume (never explicitly stated). He has to either live up to that agreement or renegotiate it.

They are gonna have to make those cables longer, that's for sure.

IMG_0604.jpg
V4 cables are 3’ longer and may be configured to be in the middle of the car.

Is that deal documented somewhere?

The specifics of the deal (i.e. what he has to do and what he'll get paid) was never disclosed. But the announcement of the deal was public and has been posted here a few times and is included below, with the relevant section in bold. And yes, then they cut a deal with Ford, then GM, then, ... and no one knows how the deals may interact:

  • Tesla, for the first time, will open a portion of its U.S. Supercharger and Destination Charger network to non-Tesla EVs, making at least 7,500 chargers available for all EVs by the end of 2024. The open chargers will be distributed across the United States. They will include at least 3,500 new and existing 250 kW Superchargers along highway corridors to expand freedom of travel for all EVs, and Level 2 Destination Charging at locations like hotels and restaurants in urban and rural locations. All EV drivers will be able to access these stations using the Tesla app or website. Additionally, Tesla will more than double its full nationwide network of Superchargers, manufactured in Buffalo, New York.

I think it might be harder to be allowed to charge different EVs different prices without a physically tangible different interface like the built in magic dock adapter. But as I said, we will see. I expect Tesla will do whatever is most likely to make Tesla the most money.
Actually, it's quite simple. When I Plug & Charge at an EA charger, I get a discount on charging my Mach E that I don't when I charge with my Lightning. How? The charger interrogates the vehicle and identifies it using a standard protocol.

When I Plug & Charge at EVGo I used to get a discount that I no longer get because I changed my membership level. How? The charger interrogates the vehicle and identifies it using a protocol specifically used by EVGo.

There's no magic in the Magic Dock. Tesla can easily know whether the vehicles that just plugged in are Teslas or some other brand. They can easily know whether the vehicles are in their membership program or not.

One problem with that advertisement. It is a massive and I mean MASSIVE lie.
It is a lie as their are not that many V3 super chargers out there and only V3 and will even work with an adaptor.

Oh, No; not this "Free" business again. Guys, when Farley sat down for that interview his phrasing was misleading (IMO). I believe, Ford has since come out and said there will be a charge for the adapter. I would be "shocked" if Ford provided free Adapters. It's just not going to happen. Ok, that's my rant.
What I was trying to convey was the lack of clarity surrounding price. Free was discussed, even if erroneously, so I mentioned it as the extreme of one end of the spectrum. Who knows how high the price could be at the other end! Sorry that I triggered your rant switch! ?

What advertisement?

If you're referring to the announcement I quoted, it's 3,500 by the END OF 2024. And, there is also a commitment to DOUBLE the number of the supercharger network (see last line).

earlier in that same press release was the following:

Today, companies including Tesla, General Motors, EVgo, Pilot, Hertz and bp, among others, are announcing new commitments to expand their networks by thousands of public charging ports in the next two years, using private funds to complement federal dollars and putting the nation’s EV charging goals even closer within reach.
within the context and timing of the announcement (feb 23, 2023, two weeks after the first set of magic docks had gone live) it would appear the tesla portion is all private dollars on tesla's part. the section where tesla's portion is described is the same as where all of the other charging networks announced expansion plans using private dollars or competing for NEVI funds. most of those announcements were aspirational and won't deliver results anywhere close to the dates noted (i.e. 1920 ford dealerships with 2-ports by jan 2024).

This is nice, not useful but nice. Shows how solid their unit is :
reminds of the absurd tests we used to see on Top Gear ?

OK, if you meant 3500 chargers, then I agree with you. Your original email, in the context of the one it replied to made it sound like there was some promise of 3500 Magic Docks. We have no idea how many MDs are coming.

Don't forget that the adapter will certainly work with V4s, although so far it is looking like v4s may come with MDs built in.

Better to watch this one:

Not following you. 3,500 Tesla Superchargers will be able to charge non-Tesla vehicles. Whether that is with Magic Dock, or Tesla putting a CCS nozzle on them, who cares?
