Is it my imagination that all Model 3 have sold out just this week?

Did the $7500 really make people jump on them ?

Last week, there were many available for immediate delivery but this week, I see 2 LR M3 within my area....

Tesla M3/Y were always sold out, and had a 6 months wait time. But people that were scheduled for nov/dec delivery put off delivery to the beginning of the new year so that they can get the $7500 credit. So there was an artificial supply surplus in nov/dec. But since tesla gave a discount of $7500 in Dec, those same people swooped up the cars in Dec instead of Jan.

Which is exactly why Tesla did it. They didn't want their sales numbers for 2022 pushed into 2023. I think it's fair to say that it worked.

If it weren’t bad enough that Tesla is run by a distracted, egotistical, super-narcissist…they no longer come with passenger lumbar for the 3 and Y so it could never be an option for me.
The removal of USS and no 360 camera is a dealbreaker for me. Even if the new Y has the comfort suspension (test drove one with it and it’s nice)… The Y is becoming a car that’s annoying to drive in high traffic urban areas.

What is up with a 360 camera system anyway? Most of car makers either remove it from basic trims or not even include it at launch. I agree with you that it is very annoying for a basic safety feature like 360 camera is not included in a $40k+ car. Sellers on Amazon are selling one system for less than $200.

All new m3 are gone within 200 miles from me. 2 weeks ago there were dozens.
Only 3 MY are left in DFW-Austin-SA stretch. There were so many before. People are really enjoy reeling it in.

I was thinking the tax credit for Tesla would get restored immediately in Oct, just like Kia's got terminated immediately in Oct. But it looks like that's not the case.

You're right, it makes perfect sense for Tesla to go ahead and offer the $7500 now (even though it's at their expense rather than taxpayers') during this gap so that inventory doesn't pile up while customers wait until Jan 1. It's no coincidence that their discount is the exact same dollar amount as the tax credit.

I think in Tesla's case, they can't implement a 360 cam because there are too many blind spots due to the orientation of the cameras, the same reason Ford can't implement Sentry mode.

Quick aside from an owner that’s had both vehicles.

I’ve currently got a 22 MME GT and a 22 MYLR7. I sold my 21 MME Premium EX4 before taking delivery of the MY in Sept and it was a mistake. The build quality of the Y is embarrassing in comparison to the MMEs.

Since Sept, the Y has had service 5 times for the same issue (on top of others that have been resolved) and been in service for almost 20% of the time I’ve had it. The last visit involved replacing the front motor, but the bad bearing issue persists. I’m now pursuing a buy back under my state’s lemon law.

While the Tesla technology is superior in so many ways, Ford knows how to build cars at scale. And being limited on service centers and the whims of their service tech’s horrible communication via chat in app only, it’s going to take a lot for me to reconsider the brand in the future. Your mileage may vary.

I am curious. Why not wait 1-2 weeks and let the tax payers (govt) pay that $7500 come Jan 1st? Unless Tesla is real desperate to keep the delivery numbers close to guidance by any means to avoid another stock price slide. The cost of hoarding a car for 1-2 weeks isn't $7500, right? Especially if they claim they have low inventory now.

The golden metric for Tesla has always been delivery numbers, both actual and projected, practically nothing else has ever mattered.

I don't really know, but I've heard of certain advantages to getting the sale on the books in 2022. All kinds of accounting and tax ramifications.

Since Tesla doesn't use the dealership model where dealers have lot space to store cars, it's probably harder for them to let inventory back up too. They're more of a "just in time" model.

But yeah, it is a rather short window (basically 2 weeks). They were already doing a $3750 credit for a few weeks prior as well. This probably won't effect brand new buyers anyway, as the process usually takes more than 2 weeks. This is more for those people that have already had an order in place for some time and it's just due to arrive now. They were probably feeling slighted and trying to push their deliveries out to January. But that must mess Tesla up enough that it was worth jacking the discount up for the rest of the year.

I have both and my experience is different from yours. I had no mechanical or software issues on the MYP. The only issue I had was the panel gap on the trunk was skewed and it was quickly fixed by the service center without any questions. I will say that overall the GTPE has better build quality, but it also has many more problems, from the screen resetting while driving, to flaky PAAK, to no being able to switch drive modes, limiting top speed to 80, etc. I could go on. And that's not including the eventual HVBJB failure.

The GTPE wins in the looks department, but Ford needs to get its act together and fix all these problems, and let us schedule an HVBJB replacement. Or at the very least have an automatic program where if we have a HVBJB failure, we can drop it off at the dealer of our choice immediately, and Ford will give us a loan equivalent to the MME or pay for a similar rental. Also, pay for the car payment while it's in the shop.

If anything, the real value in Tesla is its supercharger network, and autonomous drive capability. If you can get past the looks, the ownership experience allows one to truly traverse the continent without a worry. Doing so in any other EV that relies on a network of half-broken, half-malfunctioning EV chargers, all of which are manufactured and maintained by a wide array of third party companies just doesn't compare.

They were also selling the demo models, so they would want to close those out if they could. But for buyers, mainly avoiding the wait and not having to wait until next year's taxes to get the credit.
