OTA Updates - What triggers them?

I don’t know how many people do the same thing I do whenever I get a new car, but a car that it was pretty much like my last cars as far as the controls and it’s little quirks. So the manual always goes in the glove box unless there might be something in there, but I haven’t run across. This is interesting under software updates and if you’re getting a non-drivable software update this could be a possible reason why it keeps failing. I’m just saying, how do you know it’s going on, I guess you could look at FordPass, but who does that before they go jump in your car right away ?

Once you begin a non-drivable software update, you cannot:
• Cancel the update.
• Enter your vehicle unless you have a key blade.
• You can open the doors using the mechanical latch if child locks are not on.
• Use the remote control to lock, unlock or start your vehicle.
• Drive your vehicle.
• Charge your vehicle.
• Charging resumes once the update completes.”

It totally depends. If it’s nonsense, like a dumb game that is only useful if your phone is dead and you’re at a public charger, then it gets a high priority push from Ford to all vehicles within a week or so. If it’s something we want (like BlueCruise upgrades) then apparently you need a side of pure ephin‘ magic.

I dream of the day when updates are available "on demand", and not just when they feel like rolling them to small groups. unfortunately I doubt that will ever happen.

Hell, at this point, I’d be happy with a “retry update” button for times when you get the dreaded “update did not complete successfully” message.

You’ll know when an inhibit update is coming.

Set a schedule for updates. If it’s an inhibit update, after it downloads, then the update should install at the scheduled time automatically.

If you get an inhibit update downloaded and ready to install the car will ask you if you want to install it now or wait until your scheduled installation time. If you hit install now the car will tell you to turn it off and give you a countdown timer to exit the vehicle and shut the door. After that the big screen will say something to the effect of ‘preparing update’ or ‘installing update’.

Does anyone know if/what the equivalent of the diagnostic connectivity icons are for the Mach-E?

The trucks Sync4 allows you to add them to the top bar and then monitor the various aspects.

My last OTA was August, 2023.

My wife’s Lincoln Aviator doesn’t get OTA. Instead you download the updates on a usb drive and install then yourself.

OTA updates are more convenient……. When they work. I wish we had the USB download option. It’s free and it works.

Should the up/down arrows showing communication is working be on all the time? I only get them about 25% of the time. I have a new 2023 GTPE that I just took home few weeks ago. I have had 3 updates to 5.1.1 so far. Would like to get up to date.
Also I have seen that maybe Wifi should be left off, more conducive to actually getting updates. Have others found this to be true?

What triggers OTA updates is a secret. Rumor is that sacrificing a live chicken at sunrise may trigger them.
