Passing power

I’ve heard a lot of questions about GT passing power. My experience is that it’s actually a little too fast in that it takes some getting used to.

My old car was a Chevy SS. Ran mid 12s in the 1/4 mile, so it wasn’t slow.

With the GTPE, every time I go to pass someone, even with half throttle I tend to “overdo it” and end up going 20-30mph faster than the person next to me. At least I do it quietly…..

Im so used to having to think ahead, give it gas, wait for the downshift, then go with the SS. So when I do the same kinda thing in the GTPE, it kinda catches me off guard, like “whoops, didn’t mean to blow past that car.”

Am I the only one that reflexively leans forward when passing a car, as if it will make me go faster? I think it's subconscious after having so many slow cars over the past 35 years... ?

Sounds good! What about a scenario where you do several passes, e.g several long trucks on narrower roads. Is the third consecutive acceleration from e.g 40-90mph still ”reliable and fast” or do you get inconsistency?

I’m worried if the car starts to slow down considerably with the gray bars, will it make passing unpredictable and thus annoying or even dangerous?

It feels really great, but every time I remind myself that the drivers in cars ahead don't expect to find out that someone appears next to them on the left lane so quickly and can go to that left lane...

That is one reason I love manuals - Shift and then gas - no delay! Let's not talk about my passing speeds in my GT350 or my old GT500....

Driving 90 on narrow roads sounds irresponsible.

Yep same here with a 4x when I first got it. On 2 way I get closer to the vehicle before I pull out into an on coming lane. You need to watch how fast you catch up and the timing is way different (quicker). Takes a little to get use of. Bonus is you are not in that oncoming lane for to long and opens new possibilities. Whisper is a good highway mode for me now.

Not going to take the “is it dangerous” bait.

But to answer your question, 40-90 acceleration is consistent. If you’re slowing back to 40 mph, it’s only a few seconds before the gray bars disappear. But since you can see them, you know what to expect.

40-75 will happen in a blink of an eye. 75-90 will always have the gray bars but is still fast enough to pass.

Under 75 mph it accelerates like an 11 second car.

75-100 like a 13 second car.

Above 100…… like a vw bug.

You are up to 90 mph so quick and that is not full throttle or pushing it at all. It is like zoom zoom don't blink you are passed. For me while passing (multi) it has always had the passing presence. Not worried in the least and have come to trust it on the road as it works.

Can happen no matter how fast you pass and needs to be watched. Less time you are beside them the less probability of that happening. Probability increases when you are trying to pass more than one without seeing if you need to wait your turn. Under those conditions you may want to watch out a bit more. We have shoulders here but who wants to drive on them. I do agree that you can scare them a bit no probs as that quick is not that common yet. Just look at your rear view after you are the first off a red light. Silent and effortless it is pretty cool.

Yep, it's extremely quick to get around people and you are in and out of the oncoming lane with ease. I agree that you need to get closer prior to passing just so no one is surprised by you. Most people aren't used to how quick we can appear/disappear

IMO the best trait of EVs because while launching is certainly fun, minimizing passing times is actually a safety feature in its own right.

Since we both own SS Sedans, I must say that when I knew I was passing I’d double or triple click that left flappy paddle for a quick rev-matched downshift before I made my pass, no waiting. I guess I prefer that method because it more closely approximated driving with a manual and picking your gear yourself.

Probably also explains why I’m fiending to get my GT350 so I can row my own again at 8250rpm. And @sotek2345 always rubbing it in ?
