There is no rear pedestrian detection...
Just yesterdy I was backing out of my garage.

Before I got to the end of the driveway the car started beeping and displayed a cross traffic message so I took my foot off the accelerator and about that same time I saw a kid running in the backup camera.

There were no cars moving on the road, just the kid running.

Right. Key word - RUNNING. Not stationary. Much more likely to be detected.

Or if you're backing slowly out of your driveway that has a bit of a pitch. It senses the road and slams on the brakes. Have to sit there and try again. If I go fast enough I can just back out like a normal person.
When I first got my car 2 years ago, it would do this 100% of the time on driveways I frequented. It was way too sensitive. No longer. I still get the warnings/braking when appropriate, but not in those driveways. I chalked the change up to a software update.

I tested this feature when I first got the car (no, not with living children - I’m not as dumb as a Tesla driver! ?) I placed my plastic recycling bins at the end of the driveway and backed out, keeping my foot on the accelerator the entire time. In all instances, AEB kicked in and stopped me a bit more than a foot away from the bins. They were not running ?

Yup. Big wall of recycling bins, not a little blue blowup dolphin...

My recycling bins aren’t actually very large, nor would they form a “wall”. Think Rubbermaid tub size

Let's be clear. The bumper have detection for obstacles. They are ultrasonic detectors. They detect objects IF they line up properly. A severe angle means they may, or may not line up. Even if they alert, this may or may not trigger the reverse brake assist. In other words, besides testing on a blow up dolphin, you need to rely on your mirrors, and eyes, to not run over anything, like a child or pet.

For that matter, to have true awareness of your surroundings, you should walk around your vehicle before getting in.

The pedestrian / bicycle / car detection is done with the front radar and cameras, not the ultrasonic detectors.

I completely agree - to simplify: “the alert driver is the primary obstacle detection and avoidance system. Any automated systems are just an additional convenience.”

Which comes in handy - for example pick up grandkids today and put backpacks in trunk - all clear - get in and as I get ready to back out kids come running by. Alarm actually went off before they came into view. Not really a close call as I always back up extra slowly at school and would have seen them in plenty of time but the alarm was much appreciated!

It is distressing how careless so many pedestrians are on city streets. Drivers should not have to be way more careful than that pedestrian, but so much of the time I experience that. Have a lifetime goal of never hitting one, but they should be helping too. I run several miles a week on city streets - I never cross a street without looking all directions.

In some cities, like Ann Arbor, they've gone ridiculously far in making it "safer" for MORONS. They keep adding crosswalks with all sorts of flashing lights and such, and the MORONS keep crossing at other spots, so they add more crosswalks. I watched an elderly woman on an electric wheelchair driving down the center turn lane for maybe 100 yards. I got behind her and put on my flashers, but I wanted to simply run her over because she was a MORON.

The students stare at their phones when walking. Last year in heavy rain I almost took one out, never saw them in the poor visibility. But sure, if I run them over, I go to jail. That's so wrong!

At some point, the Darwin principle needs to come into play.

You need to come to Philadelphia sometime. Did you know that it’s illegal to cross streets at marked intersections or crosswalks? Pedestrians are required to dart out into the middle of streets unexpectedly. They get bonus points if they dart out from behind a large truck or other vehicle that totally hides them. Also, pedestrians are only allowed to wear black or dark-colored clothing at night (this also seems to be a rule in the suburbs) ???
