Range question

I recently took home '22 CAR1 AWD with extended battery. Advertised range was 314 but even at 100% charge this is only 259 miles. Is this because of my driving habits? What can I do to improve my range. I am in sunny Los Angeles so I know weather is not a factor for the battery. Does the range change as I drive it more and more? It has 1800 miles so far. I mostly drive the freeways between 70-80 mph and avg. about 3.2-3.6 miles/kWh.

That is the expected range at those speeds. If you want to see 300+ then drive 68 mph or less.

The computer will calculate your range better and better with time. It will learn your driving habits. My car started out about the same. Today ( 14 months since purchase) my range was 292 miles with an 85% charge on the 88 Kwh battery. That would be 342 miles on a full charge. Of course, if you are racing stop signs and red lights enjoying the peppy acceleration and/or cranking up the AC all the time, then you won't see those numbers.

That is why they call it the Guess O Meter (GOM.) if you look at your average of about 3.4 mi/kWh then at 90kW of charge you would get 306 miles.

If you want better range, slow down. Stay off the freeway. Take a route with lots of stop lights.
The Ford EPA range estimate is based on 50% stop & go driving (with an average speed of 21MPH) and 50% “highway driving” with a top speed of 60MPH and an average speed of 48 MPH. So if you want EPA range, that’s how you get it.

This is a great example of how comparing miles per kWh, or mpg on an ICE vehicle, in different parts of the country is simply a waste of time.

Just took a 1,050 mile roundtrip. On the way down, it was high 40s at the start, but quickly warmed into the 60s. Trip odometer noted 2.8 miles/kWh.

On the way back, temps were in the 60s when we departed, and rose to near 80 midway, dropped back to 70 at the end. Trip odometer noted ... 2.8 miles/kWh.

I drive 75 pretty consistently. I have never seen more than 3.1 on any segment of a highway trip in over 10,000 miles of driving between two different Mach-E Premium AWD ERs.

I suggest you rent a ICE vehicle with a good trip computer that has real time gas consumption. Go on the highway and drive at 50mph, 60mph, 70mph and 80mph and note the current MPG.

It's really too bad the Mach E is missing a real time power usage meter on the dash.

My Leaf had two....basic bar graph by the speedometer and a more calibrated bar graph in a main display menu. You can instantly see the effects of going faster. Under 60 mph I was usually below a 20kw rate, but above that quickly pushed up against 30kw or more.

The Mach E is also not as efficient as the Leaf in miles/kw likely because it is bigger and heavier; but it gets up and goes so much faster.....

Just for a reference a car traveling at 80mph uses approximately 40% more energy compared to traveling at 60mph. So in reality the opening post of this thread suggests the GOM is working perfectly.
